An upward trend in vehicle registrations in Nagaland has been witnessed in the first 8 months of 2023, with an increase of 2.9% over the corresponding period last year.
Data available on the VAHAN Dashboard showed that the total vehicle registration from January-August 2023 stood at 18,231, as against 17,719 during the same period last year.
This is the highest number of registrations in the last four years, since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic caused a slowdown in vehicle sales.
In 2020, the number of registrations till August was just 9,638, compared to 21,470 in 2019. The figures for the corresponding period (January-August) in the following years were 14,218 (2021) and 17,719 (2022).
Accordingly, the Dashboard reflected that vehicle registrations fell by 44.16% in 2020 to 16,216 from 29,040 in 2019. However, they surged by 34.66% to 21,837 in 2021.
In 2022, the upward trend continued with 25,670 registrations, showing a healthy 17.55% rise over 2021.
With the figures till August showing higher registrations, it is likely that 2023 will see an even further increase in the number of vehicle registrations.
Petrol and diesel rule, no takers for EV
An analysis of the fuel type registration in 2023 shows that the total is evenly split between petrol and diesel vehicles. Out of the total registrations (18,448 till September 5), 8,906 were diesel cars, while 8,590 were petrol.
700 petrol/hybrid and 239 petrol/ethanol vehicles were also registered while there was one diesel/hybrid registration.
Meanwhile, the Dashboard revealed that electric battery-operated vehicles (BOVs) continue to be have not takers with just three registrations in 2023. Only 62 electric BOVs have been registered in Nagaland so far.
The registration of compressed natural gas (CNG)-based vehicles also stood at mere 10 vehicles.
Tata Motors dominates, high-end vehicles attract
In terms of manufacturers (makers), Tata Motors continued its dominance with 3,325 registrations so far in 2023. In addition, there were another 375 registrations under Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. At 5479, Tata Motors topped the overall registration in 2022.
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd was second with 2,807 registrations, followed by 2,004 for Ashok Leyland and 1,526 for Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd, at 1,127, was neck to neck with the total registration of 1,263 in 2022.
In the two-wheeler segment, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (P) Ltd remained at the top with 1,191 registrations, followed by Hero Motocorp Ltd at 930. TVS Motor Company Ltd and Bajaj Auto Ltd were respectively at 904 and 828.
Meanwhile, the penchant for “luxury” and relatively high-end vehicles continued, and the Dashboard reported four Mercedes-Benz, one BMW, and one Jaguar Land Rover registrations. In addition, there were 36 Isuzu vehicles, while Skoda-Volkswagen had 55 registrations. Registrations of Royal Enfield at 414 were above the 2022 total of 341.
The VAHAN Dashboard is an online data repository of all vehicle registrations and other related issues in the country developed by the National Informatics Centre and maintained by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways.
In Nagaland, one State Transport Authority and eight regional or district transport offices—Dimapur, Kohima, Mokokchung, Mon, Phek, Tuensang, Wokha, and Zunheboto—are integrated with the Dashboard.
