A total of 2133 conjunctivitis cases have been reported across the Dimapur district during the July-August period, according to an official estimate by a district health official.
The data provided by an official from the District Hospital Dimapur (DHD) stated that the total cases have been collected from the DHD, schools (both private and government), several private hospitals as well as Primary and Community Health Centres.
Although extensive in its effort, the official also does not ruled out the probability of unreported cases as some patients might be self-isolating at home without visiting the hospital or other heath care units.
Among those being treated at the DHD, it was learnt that acute hemorrhagic and acute mucopurulent conjunctivitis were the most common forms prevalent among the patients.
The medical official also added that the maximum number of the cases detected have been from school-going children.
The age groups divided into 6-10 years, 11-15 years and 16 -20 years accounted for 1257 or 59% of the total cases, the official added.
Nonetheless, the official mentioned that the overall number of cases has started to wane in the last few days.
The official has further attributed the trend largely to the successful isolation of patients through the suspension of physical classes by the district authorities from August 21 to 16.
