• Calls for financial discipline by NE States
• Make full use of NESAC, urges Shah
Kohima, October 10 (MExN): Lack of rail, road and air connectivity; violence by extremist groups; and lack of thrust on development of the North-East by previous governments were the three major roadblocks to the development of the region, the Union Minister for Home and Cooperation, Amit Shah asserted on Sunday.
Presiding over the 70th Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Guwahati on October 9, he, however, he contrasted it with the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has made many efforts in the last 8 years to bring peace, enhance connectivity and prioritise development of the region.
After finding the root cause of all the problems of the NE, the GoI has made many efforts to solve them, he said.
Financial discipline by the NE States is essential to contribute in making Indian economy the second largest in the world, he added.
As per a PIB release issued from Kohima, Shah further told the meeting that everyone in the country considers the languages, cultures, cuisines and costumes of the NE as its heritage and the GoI led by Modi is “striving to preserve and promote the identity of this region.”
He also urged the Chief Ministers of NE States to make full use of North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) for flood control, irrigation, tourism, afforestation and agriculture and appoint a nodal officer for the centre in the States for its maximum and better utilisation.
Emphasising over the measures to prevent floods, Shah said that the purpose of hydro power plants is not only to generate energy, but they can also be used in flood prevention.
Besides, the ideal use of 271 wetlands can also help in preventing floods, while batting for keeping the region flood-free.
The present Government believes that the all-round development of the country is possible by taking all the languages of India together and a provision has been made in the new National Education Policy that primary education should only be in the mother tongue, Shah claimed.
He further maintained that the Modi-led Government is giving priority to natural agriculture and digital agriculture and for certification of natural products, and process to form a Multi-State cooperative society by merging Amul and 5 other cooperative societies has been started.
More than 500 laboratories across the country have been established to certify quality of soil and natural products, he added.
Shah also urged the NE States free from use of single use plastic for environmental protection.
A flood-free and drug-free NE is very important for the Modi-led government, he added.
