On Sunday evening as incessant rains drenched Dimapur and other districts of the State, a stretch of public road (100 meters approximately) leading to Seithekhe Basa village and others from Sodzulhou village eroded away owing to the strong current of the Chathe river.

Informing this in a press release on Tuesday, Vice Chancellor of Global Open University (GOU), Dr HN Dutta stated that it has disrupted all public communications formerly maintained through this public road.

Dutta stated that the villagers of Seitheke Basa and others had approached the university seeking passage through its campus, which has been permitted considering the occurrence of natural disaster.

The erosion has also affected the eastern point of the University, removing the underground soil of its boundary wall, and threatening further damages to the University building which accommodates the Hotel Management Department.

On contacting the University administration, an official told The Morung Express that the GBs and Village Council Chairpersons of Seithekhe Base and Sodzulhou village had tried meeting with the Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) to inform him of the situation. However, they were unable to meet the officer he said.

The official also said that the University had hired excavators to carry out earthworks on the eroded portions. But work could not begin as of Tuesday as the water level had not receded enough for the machines to operate near the river.

“Considering the plight of the villagers, we have allowed them to use our university’s gate from 6 in the morning to 8 in the evening,” the official stated, while noting that the make-shift arrangement could pose security risks for the University.

Further, the official noted that this was the first time such a calamity had occurred in the area and was of the view that activities such as sand and gravel mining could have caused the erosion.
