The BJP’s National General Secretary, Tarun Chugh said that it is upto to the party leadership to decide which party it would align with in Nagaland for the 2023 Assembly Polls. Chugh’s comments came even as a game of treachery was playing out in the NPF camp in Kohima on April 29 with 21 legislators plotting and deciding to join the NDPP.

Chugh, who landed in Nagaland, Friday, for a three-day visit was cautious in his responses at a press conference in Dimapur choosing to put the onus on the BJP’s top leadership to decide on alliance partners and whether there will be “seat sharing in Nagaland or not.” “No single person can determine the seats; it all depends on the Central Election Committee (BJP), which will look into it when the election approaches,” he said.

He rather chose to extol on the BJP’s development programmes in Nagaland and the north-east in general, stating that, starting with the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the north east region has been on the BJP’s development radar. According to him, it was under Vajpayee, a Union Ministry, especially targeting the NE region was established and which is continuing today. He added that this is being carried on by the Narendra Modi government with the Prime Minister putting special emphasis on Nagaland.

While stating, “The BJP wants to uplift the people of the state (Nagaland),” Chugh made mention of the development schemes being implemented by the NDA government like the Ujjawala, Swachh Bharat, Jan Dhan etc, besides the introduction of medical insurance scheme for the people. He added that the NDA government has allocated the highest amount of funds for Rural Development Fund in the Region.

On the purpose of his visit, he said that it was to strengthen the BJP presence in Nagaland, starting from the grassroots.

The party’s State Media Cell further informed that Chugh held a series of meeting with BJP State office bearers, state Morchas and Intellectual Cell. It said, “The visit of the National General Secretary is necessitated in view of the upcoming 2023 Election and organisational structure of the State BJP Nagaland.”
