Dimapur, April 19 (MExN): The department of History, Livingstone Foundation International College (LFIC) celebrated World Heritage Day on April 18, based on the theme ‘Heritage and climate.’
On the occasion, Vice Principal of Pranabananda Women’s College C Narola Ao deliberated on the theme and said that World Heritage Day is celebrated to spread awareness of the rich cultural diversity and the importance of preserving ancient heritage. ‘On the value of heritage in the context of Naga society – our ancestors left a trail in our history and how we developed which makes us understand and explain why and how we are,’ she said.
A press release from the LFIC stated that Naga art and culture is closely associated with socio-religious rituals, customs and practices. It said that abundance of songs, oral traditions and practices and festivals can be witnessed in the ethnographic heritage of the traditional Naga society and the passion for beauty and artistic work which inspired the Nagas to give artistic touch to almost each and everything surrounding them, appeared in their everyday life.
“The intangible components associated with ferocious acts like head hunting have their own aesthetic as well as creative value which has contributed a lot in conceptualizing the Naga identity. One example of Naga’s celebration and preservation of their heritage is the Hornbill festival at Kisama,” it stated.
Branding Kisama as the permanent, official heritage village of Nagaland, the release stated that the purpose of the village was to serve as a “window to Nagaland,” aiming to provide a preview of the entire state of Nagaland. It aims to protect and preserve all ethnic cultural heritages and focuses on bringing back the traditions that are rapidly disappearing while glorifying the ethnic cultural heritage of the state.
The release further stated that Nagaland can be a Heritage State of the world if all the districts maintain heritage sites for preservation of the rich cultural heritage. “Protecting our heritage, values and traditions is impossible through a single individual or group. Community participation and awareness can change things for the better and help our rich and varied culture,” it added.
The programme was chaired by K Dantsula, BA 2nd semester (History Honours) and welcome note by Mhayano A Odyuo, Head, Department of History. The LFI family adorned themselves in traditional clothing and ornaments to show their respect and solidarity towards heritage preservation, the release stated.
