More thunderstorm likely in isolated places in Nagaland during next two days:IMD

Power supply to consumers under Chümoukedima electrical division was severely affected on April 17 as gusty winds uprooted trees as well as electric poles and snapped power line at around 8am in the morning.

Several lines were snapped due to falling trees while some poles were also uprooted, SDO (Electrical) Chümoukedima division informed in the evening, adding that the department’s staff has been working since the morning to restore the power supply.

At Patkai Bridge, over seven power department employees were seen climbing poles and pulling lines to connect the snapped lines around 4pm in the afternoon.

‘We have been on the job since this morning as we began to receive complaints right after the storm,’ a supervisor said, while another waited atop an electric pole to connect the lines.

All the areas under Chümoukedima feeder were affected, he added, further informing that while almost all High Tension (11 KV) lines have been restored, some works were left for low tension wires.

This was later confirmed by the SDO, who further informed that while all the HT lines have been restored and the department is working diligently to restore all supply, though short-staffed.

There are four 11 KV lines under the division – Chümoukedima, Patkai, Chümoukedima and Sukhuvi.

He added that power disruptions were also reported from Niuland, which is currently under Chümoukedima division.

Hopefully, if weather permits, we will be able to restore all lines by tomorrow, the SDO added.

Since April 15, strong winds have affected power supply in many areas in Nagaland.

More rain in the offing
Meanwhile, the Indian Metrological Department (IMD), the national weather agency, has forecasted more rain or gusty winds in the next two days in Nagaland.

According to the IMD’s five-day ‘All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin’ updated at 8pm on Sunday, Rainfall or thundershower were observed at a few places over Nagaland and other North-East States from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on April 17.

On April 18, the bulletin forecasted likelihood of thunderstorm accompanied by lightning/gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) at isolated places over Telangana, Kerala-Mahe and with lightning at isolated places over Assam-Meghalaya, Nagaland-Mizoram-Manipur-Tripura, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal.

Similar prediction was also made for April 19, though the IMD foresaw improved weather situation for the next two days – April 20 and 21.

On the other hand, the IMD predicted ‘heat wave conditions’ in isolated pockets over West Rajasthan, south Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Kutch, Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal.
