State-wide business shutdown on Sep 16: CNCCI

DIMAPUR, SEP 14 (NPN): In a significant development, Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce &Industry (CNCCI) has announced State-wide closure of all shops and business establishments on September 16.

CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr Seyievilie Mor in a statement said the decision has been made to show solidarity with Dimapur Chamber of Commerce &Industry’s (DCCI) “shutter down” protest in Dimapur against multiple taxation by NPGs and government agencies.

CNCCI, the apex business body of Nagaland, mentioned that the State-wide shutter down call was also against the State government’s failure to respond to their representation submitted to the chief secretary demanding immediate resolution of multiple taxation by NPGs, removal of all forms of taxes/fees collected by civic bodies on items that come under GST regime (which has subsumed all taxes under “One Nation, One Tax”), immediate implementation of SARFAESI Act and representation from trade bodiesin all municipal, town and ad-hoc town councils.

They warned that in the event of the State government failing to act even after one-day shutdown of business establishments, CNCCI would stepup agitation.

They also solicited full support and cooperation of the public in this regard.

It may be mentioned that the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) made a clarion call for one-day total shutdown of all shops and business establishments in Dimapur September 16 against rampant multiple and illegal taxation by various groups as well government agencies, affecting the business community.

Extending full support to the cause, the Nagaland Medicine Dealers’ Association (NMDA) had also announced closure of all pharmacies and medical business establishments in Dimapur on September 16.

Meanwhile, sources informed that the state government has taken note of the issues highlighted by the trade bodies and would be taking remedial steps to address them.

Organizations back DCCI’s shutdown call
Meanwhile, Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), Chümoukedima chambers of commerce & trade association (CCCTA) and GS Road Business Owners’ Association (GSRBOA) have extended support to the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industries call for one day shutdown of business establishments in Dimapur on September 16.
NCD: NCD president Etsungmomo Kikon observed that illegal taxation and extortion by various underground outfits and government agencies had become a norm in Nagaland. He alleged that the menace of illegal taxation prevailing in the State was creating fear and resentment among the business community and public.
He said the fundamental right of the people to live with dignity, without fear, freedom to profess any profession and the right to equality and equal protection of law guaranteed by the constitution were thus violated. He claimed that the business community had borne the brunt of such illegal collections, and ultimately the consumers had become victims.
Kikon urged all stakeholders and general public not to remain silent and be content in paying the inflated prices, but speak out as one voice to push for change.
CCCTA: Extending support to DCCI, CCCTA general secretary Medochijzo Medoze, in a press release said that association would also be observing “shutter down” on that day within Chumoukedim town from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CCTCA has, therefore, all the business establishments to observe the same.
GSRBOA: GSRBOA through its president Omega Yepthomi said the all the shops along GS Road would remain closed on that day. GSRBOA has appealed to state government to give a permanent solution to “this multiple illegal taxation by the various groups and government agencies.”
Meanwhile, the association has also urged the government to look into the pathetic road condition of the GS Road, Station Road and Golaghat Road.
GSRBOA claimed that the business establishment on those roads contribute “maximum revenue” to the government, but condition of the road was overlooked by the government and left unrepaired since many years.
The association has, therefore, appealed to the government to intervene and immediately repair the roads.
