Correspondent KOHIMA, SEP 6 (NPN) : Advisor School Education KT Sukhalu has urged teachers to adopt the changes brought about by the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to improve the State’s overall education scenario.
Speaking at the State-level Teachers’ Day celebration at the directorate of school education (DoSE) here on Sunday, Sukhalu said Foundational Literacy and Literacy Programme under NEP 2020 must be given due importance at the pre-primary level, adding that primary education must provide a strong grasp of the basics so that students did not struggle in higher classes.
On the occasion, 21 teachers from across the State, including PGTs from 11 government schools and 10 private schools, received the State Teachers’ Award for the year 2021. The awardees of 2020 comprising of seven teachers from government institutions and six from private institutions were also awarded.
The award comprised Rs 15,000 in cash, a medal and a citation. DoSE also announced cash award of Rs 20,000 each to five needy teachers from different districts.
Congratulating winners of the national and State teachers’ awards, Sukhalu commended the services rendered by them, especially during the pandemic. He remarked that he wished to see many more Math and Science teachers in the awardees’ list in future.
He urged the teachers to participate in Capacity Building Programme under National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers’ Holistic Advancement (NISHTHA) by registering and upgrade their skills to take forward the teaching profession to a higher level.
Remindingthem that Continuous Professional Development (CPD) was an important element of school education ecosystem, the adviser said NEP 2020 envisaged that each teacher would participate in at least 50 hours of CPD opportunities every year for their professional development opportunities every year which will systematically cover the latest pedagogies regarding foundational literacy and numeracy, formative and adaptive assessment of learning outcomes.
He stressed that teachers must improve their skills for ensuring a better future for their children and grandchildren, while encouraging them to introspect their role as educators in society.
Emphasising on building moral character in students, he appealed to the teachers to also nurture the talent of their students and help them realise their true potential.
Sukhalu reminded the teachers that their words and actions both insideand outside classrooms influenced future citizens of the country and hence urged them to be mindful of what they utter and do.
Observing that society was becoming more inclusive, he remarked that children with disabilities and special needs, who would not have dreamed of education even 10 years ago, were now attending schools. He urged the teachers to embrace such changes, as an inclusive education system would create an inclusive society.
In her introductory note, school education special secretaryKevileno Angami said without teachers there would be no nation builders. Hence, she pointed out that the teachers were described as backbone of society.
Congratulating the awardees, Angami stressed that not only academic teachings, but even ethical and moral values were equally important and urged the teachers to focus on them. She appealed to them to embrace the challenges, keep themselves updated and continuously engage with the students.
On the occasion, the adviser and special secretary also released department of school education (DoSE) newsletter. Earlier, school education director WonthungoTsopoe delivered welcome address.
Swedesunuo receives national teachers’ award
DIMAPUR, SEP 5 (NPN): President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday awarded 44 unique teachers from all over India with the National Teachers’ Award 2021, on occasion of Teacher’s Day.
From Nagaland, Swedesunuo Zao, head teacher of Government Middle School, Jakhama received the prestigious “National Awards to Teachers 2021”, through a felicitation programme conducted virtually.
The award certificate and medal will be presented to Swedesunuo Zao by School Education department special secretary, Kevileno Angami, on behalf of President of India in the coming week.
The programme was also attended by Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union minister of state for education Annpurna Devi and Union secretary, department of school education & literacy under Union education ministry Anita Karwal, among others.
