‘World Population Day’ observed across Nagaland

DIMAPUR, July 12 : Nagaland joined the world in observing “World Population Day” Sunday by raising awareness on the issues arising out of rising population.

Zunheboto: District Health Society, Zunheboto observed “World Population Day” Sunday under the theme, “Provision of family planning services even in a crisis, for self-reliant nation and family” at the office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Zunheboto.

A press release by CMO Zunheboto office stated that resource person, deputy CMO Zunheboto, Dr. K. Akaho Sema spoke on the significance of the day while emphasising on the importance of family planning which would benefit the health of the mother and her children as well as the family’s economic situation.

Since parents are responsible for providing education, shelter, clothing and food for their children, Dr. Akaho said family planning has an important long-term impact on the financial situation of any family.

Dr. Akaho also informed that the “World Population Day” was preceded by a “mobilization fortnight” which was held from June 27 to July 10 in an effort to create awareness on population control and generating demand for family planning.

Speaking on population stabilization fortnight from July 11-24, Dr. Akaho said various family planning methods would be carried out, free services like sterilization, IUCD and distribution of condoms, ECP, OCP, counselling and free distribution of IEC materials and activities would be carried out in all the health units and villages.

Wokha: Wokha District Health Society observed “World Population Day” Sunday at the Conference Hall of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Wokha office.

A press release by CMO Wokha office informed that in a keynote address, Chief Medical Officer Wokha, Dr. C.W. Tungoe stressed on the importance of family planning even during the pandemic and acknowledged the difficulties faced by beneficiaries to access reproductive health care services during the pandemic.

“The health care workers are overburdened with COVID-19 cases but we cannot neglect these beneficiaries as it will create major impact on our population and economic growth in the long run,” said Dr.Tungoe.

Medical Superintendent District Hospital, Dr. Tumchobeni Kikon encouraged the health workers to mobilize beneficiaries for permanent and temporary methods of family planning in the district.

Longleng: District Health Society Longleng commemorated the “World Population Day” under the theme, “Provision of family planning services even in crisis, for a self reliant nation and family” and held a district review meeting on family planning Sunday at the Conference Hall of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Longleng office.

A press release by CMO Longleng office stated that deputy CMO Dr Philip Kent while speaking on significance of the day said the day was observed to raise awareness about the effects of overpopulation on the environment, the health problems faced by child bearing women and the importance of family planning.

He then urged all health units and medical officers not to let the pandemic hamper the delivery of the essential healthcare services.

In a keynote address, DPO(RCH/UIP) Dr Imnameren Phom gave a brief update on world population fortnight.

He also spoke on the benefits of family planning, the right age of marriage, dangers and health consequences of early pregnancy, contraceptive options for newlywed couples and spacing between children, limiting family size, timely adoption of family planning method, where to avail the services and the schemes that one can avail.

Dr Imnameren also appealed to all the members to take the responsibility in creating awareness on the importance of family planning, adoption, gender equality, poverty and maternal health and women’s rights.

Dr Ademla (obstetrics and gynaecology) District Hospital delivered a short speech on maternal health and family planning.

Phek: Phek District observed “World Population Day” under the theme, “provision of family planning services even in a crisis, for a self-reliant nation and family Sunday at Dr. Wethselo T. Mero Memorial Hall, District Hospital, Phek.

Launching the programme, Chief Medical Officer Phek Dr. Khriezotuo Paphino said the day was observed to enhance awareness on population issues, gender equity, importance of family planning, poverty alleviation and maternal health issues.

He urged upon the health care workers to create awareness and to be more professional and realistic while planning for family planning services.

DPO RCH & UIP Phek, Dr. Kolhitso Khalo highlighted the various activities to be carried out during population stabilizing fortnight from July 11-24 in all the health units across the district. He informed that mobilisation fortnight was carried out from June 27 to July 10 by the ASHAs.
