An inaugural programme of zero energy cold storage with 30 tons storage capacity was held in Tuensang on Tuesday.
A press release from the department of soil and water conservation informed that the Zero Energy Storage (ZES) was initiated by Eleutheros Christian Society (ECS) under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Chingmak Kejong and funded by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Tata Trust.
Inaugurating the zero-energy storage, agriculture production commissioner (APC), Y. Kikheto Sema acknowledged ECS for working towards the socio-economic upliftment of the people of Nagaland, particularly the people of Tuensang.
He observed that the zero-energy storage unit would be a useful facility for the farming community in the state as the power supply of the state was not going to meet the demand in many years to come.
He assured that the department would recommend the technology and see to it that the central government recognised the initiatives of ZES within the funding design and collaborate in the future.
APC stated that the state government was working towards “holistic development in the field of agriculture” and facilities such as soil testing laboratories in all districts, block level soil testing laboratories, bio fertilizer production units and meteorological observatories had been installed.
With regard to the Agro-met automatic weather stations (AWS) Kikheto informed that in collaboration with the IMD, the state government would install the agro-met AWS in all districts phase wise.
He further informed that with the help of digital agriculture mission, all such information would be integrated in the single platform and made available to farmers.
During the programme, ECS Tuensang, Chongshen gave a presentation on activities of ECS in the field agriculture and livelihood development.
He also informed that ECS had started working with the farming community in Zunheboto and Mokokchung districts and was looking forward to expand in the future.
During the interaction session, issue regarding transportation of agriculture produces to markets in Kohima and Dimapur was discussed where the observation of trucks of police department and Food Cooperation of India (FCI) transporting essential commodities into the district were going back empty.
In this regard, APC assured that the matter would be discussed with the concerned departments and work out modalities to facilitate movement of farmer produce to larger markets.
He pointed out that over Rs. 60 crore annually was spent in ration for the police personnel throughout the state and majority of the produce was imported from outside.
He suggested that essential commodities may be procured from the district itself to encourage farmers and to boost economy of the local community.
DAO office building inaugurated in Tuensang
APC, Y. Kikheto Sema on Tuesday inaugurated the newly constructed office building of the district agriculture officer (DAO), Tuensang.
Speaking at the programme, APC said that for the last 20 years, the state government had invested “huge amount of money” for construction of directorate buildings and district offices out of state plan and from HUDCO.
He encouraged the district officers not to sit idle in the office but to go out in the fields and work with sincerity and welfare for the people.
Pointing out that Tuensang district was one of the unique district headquarters in the state with its history as the headquarters NEFA, APC cited the importance of agriculture for the upliftment of the livelihood of farmers.
He stressed on the need for agri and allied departments to work in coordination and bring about a visible change.
Kikheto viewed that their performances would be counted on the basis of their field visits and innovations that could bring about sustainability to the farming communities.
Meanwhile, additional director, agriculture, B. Nyenghong Phom expressed gratitude to the engineer, contractor and officers involved in the construction of the office building.
Earlier, while presenting a technical report on the project, superintending engineer, agriculture, Achakbou Newmai informed that the office was a double storey building with six rooms on the ground floor, reception hall and seven rooms on the first floor.
The programme was chaired by DAO Tuensang, K. Showuba Yimchunger, Yungkük Baptist Church, pastor L. Ongmang said the dedicatory prayer while vote of thanks was proposed by SDAO Tuensang, Wongto Chingmak.
