Dr Pritpal Kaur, IPS, currently the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Longleng district is no stranger to Nagaland having served the state for the last seven years as a police officer and playing pivotal roles towards initiating positive societal changes in her places of posting. On June 17, Dr Pritpal Kaur was conferred the Inspirational Woman in Social Impact award at the 4th International Inspirational Women Awards (IIWA) 2023. The IIWA is an initiative by GISR Foundation, which recognizes the potential of women change makers and aims to celebrate “the commitment, courage and confidence of exceptional women across dimensions and geographical boundaries.”

“This is truly encouraging and motivating, particular for those who work in the remotest corners of India,” says the 37 years old dentist turned IPS officer who has received several accolades in the past years for her dedication towards community services.

The Award recognises Dr Pritpal Kaur for her work in providing livelihood training and counselling to drug addicts, career guidance and free coaching, training in farming, biodiversity and environment protection, war against drugs, formation of SHGs and value addition training, and promotion of sports and provision of sports equipment and events for students.

Belonging to the 2016 batch Indian Police Service (IPS), Dr Pritpal Kaur’s social impact services began in Tuensang when she along with a few officers in Tuensang initiated free coaching classes for NPSC/UPSC aspirants in the community. Dr Kaur and her colleagues even donated part of their salaries to buy books and materials for the aspirants. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Dr Kaur and her Police team spearheaded in stitching and sewing PPE gears.

However, it was during her service in Noklak as the first woman SP in the then newly created frontier district that led to recognition of her invaluable contributions to the community. A significant initiative started by the IPS officer has been the aim to combat drug use by rehabilitating drug users with vocational and livelihood skills. 480 drug dependents were provided with livelihood skills in collaboration with Noklak ITEC and Noklak Police Church.

Earlier this year, the Noklak District Police, Nagaland under the leadership of its former SP, Dr Pritpal Kaur, was awarded the SKOCH Gold Award. The recognition included Dr Kaur’s initiatives in providing coaching classes for UPSC/NPSC aspirants, establishment of science museum, library, education world, computer labs in Noklak, launching of Food processing unit- Taste of Noklak Society (TONS) and its products, Noklak masterpieces handicraft products launch, drug dependents and their rehabilitation along with livelihood training.

According, to Dr Kaur, “the needs of people, love towards humanity and my family values,” is what motivates her to go beyond the call of duty and walking the extra mile.

In her current posting in Longleng, Dr Kaur has already established similar initiatives on skill development and free coaching classes.

Despite being posted in the remotest areas in Nagaland lacking basic amenities and infrastructure, and having to start most of her initiatives from scratch, Dr Kaur says, “Challenges become opportunity when they all are dealt with compassion and empathy.”

While being a Police is her first and foremost duty, Dr Kaur hopes to continue to serve the community in the areas of education and livelihood skills especially among underprivileged sections of the society in order to provide them with same opportunity like the privileged others.
