Mokokchung, September 14 (MExN): In a bid to bolster environmental awareness, the Mokokchung Forest Division marked World Ozone Day today, highlighting the theme, “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action.” This year’s observance underscored the critical role of the ozone layer in protecting life on Earth.

The ozone layer, a delicate stratum of ozone molecules in the stratosphere, shields our planet by absorbing the majority of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This natural barrier is essential for mitigating UV radiation, which can cause severe health issues like skin cancer and cataracts, and also adversely affect wildlife and ecosystems.

Despite existing regulations, some regions still face challenges related to the illicit use of substances harmful to the ozone layer. In light of World Ozone Day, the Mokokchung Forest Division called for collective action to protect the environment. Simple steps, such as using eco-friendly products, supporting sustainable practices, and staying informed, are crucial in making a significant impact.

The event, held at the Forest Office in Marepkong, brought together teachers and students from Government Middle School Marepkong. The program, chaired by Aosungla Imsong, featured a comprehensive introduction to World Ozone Day and its significance.

Tiatemsula Imchen Fr-I presented a detailed PowerPoint on the ozone layer’s importance, including the causes and effects of its depletion. Key solutions such as reducing vehicle use, limiting pesticides, promoting recycling, and emphasizing tree plantation were discussed. Students were encouraged to take personal responsibility for environmental conservation.

Additionally, Temsuwapang demonstrated virtual and augmented reality tools, enhancing students’ understanding with 3D virtual headsets. The session included a quiz on environmental topics, such as forest fires and deforestation.

Talimeren Ao, Convergence Expert, highlighted the importance of trees and various tree species in Mokokchung District.

Overall, the celebration served as an invaluable educational experience, fostering a deeper understanding of ozone layer protection and inspiring participants to contribute to environmental stewardship.
