The Hornbill Festival is a celebration held every year from 1 – 10 December, in Nagaland, Northeast India. It is also called the ‘Festival of Festivals’.

The President of India Ram NathKovind inaugurated the environmental Naga village at Raj Bhavan Kohima on 1st December, 2017. The theme village which was visualized by the Governor of Nagaland, P.B Acharya is located inside Raj Bhavan at the lawns of the Naga Bhavan.
The Governor said that the park carried a message to preserve nature and the ecosystem and also to show love and care to birds and animals. The Governor hoped that the environmental park will carry the message of conservation to visitors especially students who visit the Raj Bhavan.
Governor visits Night Bazaar

The Governor of Nagaland P.B Acharya, lady wife of the Governor Kavita Acharya and their family members visited the first day of the Night Bazaar in Kohima on 1st December 2017.
Addressing the visitor and entrepreneurs the Governor applauded the KCCI for taking the imitative of organising the Night Bazaar and for bringing the town alive with such lively activities.
Governor Acharya also felt that the concept of night bazaar should be held at least once every week thought out the year to which the crowd accepted with a huge round of applause.
The Governor and his lady wife took a round of the Night Bazaar and interacted and encouraged the entrepreneurs who had set up their stalls at the night bazaar.
Chief Minister Nagaland inaugurates Hortiscape

Chief Minister Nagaland TR Zeliang inaugurated the floral gallery and farmer’s mela at Hortiscape at Naga heritage village at Kisama on December 1, 2017. Farmers from 11 districts are participating in the exhibition cum sale of flowers, fruits, vegetables and spices. The stalls consist of different associations, self-help groups, and flowers growers from within and outside the State exhibiting locally grown indigenous and horticulture products which are also on sale.
In the flower exhibition section various followers are on display such as annuals, biennials, perennials, orchids (hybrids & indigenous), cactus, succulents, bonsais, and flower arrangement (dry and fresh) etc. Also in the fruit and vegetable section varieties of indigenous and organic vegetables and fruits such as oranges, pumpkins, chilies, yam, pineapples, banana, lime and lemon, papaya etc are on display.
1st 2nd and 3rd and consolation prizes were selected by judges in the flowers category of ferns & foliage, cacti & succulents, indigenous foliage & flowers, bulbs & tubers, orchids (indigenous & hybrid) bonsai, perennials, annuals & biennials, flower arrangement (fresh) flower arrangements (dry). Also in the fruit vegetables and species category 1st 2nd and 3rd Prizes and consolation in the category of oranges, pineapples, banana, kiwi, lime & lemon, papaya, guava, cabbage, cauliflower, cucurbits, broccoli, leafy vegetables, carrot, reddish, Naga mircha, large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, garlic, leek and tree tomato.
The judges of the exhibition cum sale of flowers and vegetables were Arnvind Singh Research officer CIH Medziphema, Additional Secretary Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Temsunaro Aier, Associate Prof SASRD, Dr Rokolhu Keditsu, Secretary Forest, Imtienla, Limawati Ao, Director IPR, Bendanglila JDA Agri, Associate Prof, C S Maiti and Hoto Yeptho, Director Land Resource Development. Prize distribution will be held on 4th December 2017 at Hortiscape. The President of India Ramnath Kovind also visited the Hortiscape at Kisama.
Amenba Yaden inaugurates Bamboo Pavilion

The crafts bazaar organised by the Directorate of Industries and Commerce and NHHDC Ltd was inaugurated at the Bamboo Pavilion by Parliamentary Secretary, Amenba Yaden on December 1st, day one of the Hornbill Festival. It is being funded by DC (Handicrafts) Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.
The craft bazaar has 103 stalls opened by local entrepreneurs and five stalls from other neighbouring States. This year the Pavilion has a number of young entrepreneurs taking part such as-Chum chum’s bakers(Kohima), Smokey Joes Restaurant and Grill (Dimapur), My Bamboo Story (Kohima)by the Youth Net, etc.
Under the banner of the Bamboo Story, a team from St. Joseph College participating in the Youth Net’s intercollegiate entrepreneurship competition, have set up a stall selling indigenous goods and crafts and one interesting item being sold is the locally made boom box made of bamboo.
Hornbill International Photo Fest 2017 begins

Hornbill International Photo Fest (HIPFEST) 2017, a photography and art festival/exhibition was inaugurated by Parliamentary Secretary, Information & Public Relations and SIRD, Imtikumzuk on 1st December, 2017 at Heritage Village, Kisama. HIPFEST is being jointly organised by the Department of Information & Public Relations and Eastern Art Council, supported by the Department of Tourism.
HIPFEST features various aspects of photography such as acrylic/oil painting, sketching, sculpture and photos. This year’s HIPFEST features a special art exhibition (watercolour and pencil on paper) by Heather Layton, Senior Lecturer of Art in the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Rochester, with vast experience as an interdisciplinary artist.
Some of the artists who have put up their art works for sale are Moanungsang, Asang, Sentiyanger, Toshi, Atsung Longchar, Neiphrezo and Bendangtoshi Lemtur. It also includes a new form of Modern Art (Mount Crafting Design) by David Keneingutuo Sorunuo, 3D Modern Art by Akup and sculptures by T. Meren Imsong.
Altogether 45 participants are taking part in the Photography Contest under the theme ‘Colours of Nagaland,’ of which nine participants are in the children’s category (13 years and below). The judges for the competition are Heather Layton and acclaimed Naga photographers, Rokovor Vihienuo and Merimvu Doulo.
Another feature of the HIPFEST is the Glocal Film Fest to be held at ‘The Heritage’ on 5th and 6th December, 2017 from 3:00 pm to 7:00pm, featuring short films from North America and Nagaland.
The HIPFEST exhibition is open from 10:30 pm to 4:00 pm throughout the festival. The coordinator of the event, M. Ababe Ezung informed that the results and prize distribution of the photography contest will be declared on 7th December and 10thDecember respectively.
Hornbill Kids Carnival 2017 underway
Hornbill Kids Carnival 2017 started at Children Park, NHV, Kisama which is being organized by Synergy and Richa production at the Naga Heritage Village.
Highlights of the carnival include games, performances and experiences in different fields like Tram polling, Zip liner, Sky walk and many more. Kids can also showcase their talents through Mini Olympics, The voice kids and Beauty Pageant, where they will be awarded with certificates and prizes. The Kids Carnival will continue till 10th December 2017.
Art works, painting & sculptors display at Artists corner
This year also Artist corner is displaying various Art works, painting and sculptors in the at the Hornbill festival which began on 1stDecember 2017.
As many as twenty (20) artists are participating with about one hundred art works for the exhibition which are also for sale. Promotion of Visual art, Portrait, Cartoon, Sketch, Drawing etc and spot painting competition for students are the main highlights during the ten day long festival at Kisama.
Official of Art & Culture informed that theme will be a painting competition on clean election Nagaland campaign on 8th December at the Artist corner premises. The Department of Art & Culture has made avenues for people in the field encouraging the art works and the department has been working on its promotion since 1976 and with the coming of the Hornbill festival every year the department is conducting the exhibition where it encourages the local artists and promoting the artifacts of the state to take it to higher level also.
The Art Executive from Art & Culture department, Yanger Ozukum, who himself is an artist, is enthusiastically taking care of the exhibition saying his Art works are also on display. He requested the public to come forward, visit the Artist Corner and even buy the art pieces so as to encourage the participants.
The Art exhibition is organized by the Art & Culture department in coordination with the Nagaland Art society.
2nd edition of Horse riding and pony cart transportation flag off
The 2nd edition of the Horse riding and pony card transportation was flagged off by S, Chuba Longkumer, Parliamentary Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services at Naga Heritage village, Kisama today, the 1st Dec, 2017.
In the flag off, IP Khala, Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services said that the second edition was brought with demand from the public so that the people can experience the ride with the fees of Rs 30 to 60.
Secretary Tourism inaugurates craftscape
Craftscape, a portfolio on Naga craft traditions was inaugurated by Secretary for Tourism, Angau I Thou on 1st December 2017 at Kisama. The Craftscape is organized by Tribal Weave in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Art and Culture department.
Inaugurating the Craftscape, The Chief Guest encouraged the participants to continue to improvise the culture and traditions of the Nagas.
The exhibition presents landmark distributions of tribal craft specialties by skilled artisans who embark dignified livelihoods in keeping alive the intangible heritage.
The Naga artisans used of rudimentary tools and bare hands, dexterously hand craft cane and bamboo basketry, engage in woodcraft, metal work, material fiber textiles, beadwork and pottery, giving shape from past to the present.
The craft items displayed at the stalls are Anghya Nyekok (The Queen’s Bag) Thevora (Nettle Shawl), Pottery of Runguzu Nasa village, metal craft (a Konyak Naga Gunsmith), Rakdi (Head Gear), Henachi Tei (Banana Necklace), traditional earrings, Nyek (beaded necklace), cotton processing in the Naga textile grammar, Khiamniugan traditional headgear.
