President of India Ram Nath Kovind touched on themes of ‘hope’, ‘lasting peace’ and ‘resolutions’ and even ‘renewal’ but did not offer any clear cut direction on how this will be achieved only offering the outdated and repetitive saying that the key to Nagaland’s development was “infrastructure and connectivity projects”.

Rather, making a pitch of the Government of India’s foreign policy goals and the strategic frontier that Nagaland and Northeast India offers, President Kovind spoke of linking Nagaland to new markets, both in India and abroad.
“That is one of the key goals of the Government of India’s Act East Policy and of its thrust for connectivity in the states of the Northeast, including Nagaland”, he said while addressing statehood inaugural and hornbill festival 2017 at Kisama, Kohima.
Surprisingly the President made a mention of the present government in the state, “without any opposition” and terming it as “a unique situation”.
Perhaps out of touch with the present political realities in Nagaland, the President said that this present situation offered “a chance to resolve long-standing political problems, bring lasting peace” and pointing out that this “can accelerate the process of development and of creating jobs and opportunities”.
Nothing new was said by President Kovind on the most important issue before the public of Nagaland, the peace process and the prospect of a political settlement. The only reference made was this: “Today Nagaland is at the edge of making history. After years of insurgency, there is hope”.
The President congratulated all the “Naga groups for having come so far” and expressed his confidence that a “final agreement – one that is fair to all and meets the expectations and aspirations of all – will be reached soon”.
