Chief Minister of Nagaland TR Zeliang has informed that a number of road projects have been approved and sanctioned by the Central government and expects that every district and parts of Nagaland will soon have quality roads. The CM said this while launching the Dimapur City Road Project on January 17.
“Good roads are a prerequisite for an all round development of a State. And having successfully got the sanction for starting the 4 Laning of Dimapur-Kohima road which is in full swing, it is now important to develop other roads, for which our government is earnestly striving to achieve”, Zeliang said.
He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MORTH) for sanctioning two important projects namely two-laning of 4.4 kms of New Field Check Gate to Zion Hospital and Four-Laning of 12.90 kms from Zion Hospital to Chumukedima which will be a Cement Concrete road for better quality. The Chief Minister expressed hope that these projects will be completed within 18 months.
Zeliang also disclosed that the widening and improvement of this stretch of 13 kms of plain portion of Dimapur- Chumukedima road had “a long history”. He mentioned that clearance of roadside trees for double laning of this road was taken up but land owners had objected to the same and sought intervention of the Hon’ble Court. Later an alternative route for 4-laning of Dimapur-Kohima road was taken up from NH-36 in Karbi-Anglong through Ranga-Pahar Army cantonment to 7th Mile area by by-passing the main town area which also received objections from various quarters.
“Years have been lost due to land issue and that’s one reason why time and again, I keep stressing on the need to be generous with land for any developmental activities as in the end it is us who enjoys the fruit of development”, the CM said.
Zeliang has also expressed relief that the State Government has now adopted the Nagaland Road Maintenance Policy 2017. With this new Policy in place and earmarked funds available, the CM was hopeful that the Department will be able to ensure better up-keep and maintenance of the roads.
The CM has also committed for an early construction of the bridges that had collapsed or damaged in and around Dimapur due to unprecedented rains that was received in the year 2017.
“With the support and cooperation of the public, we will very soon travel on better roads in every part of Nagaland and change and put Nagaland at par with other States”, the CM stated.
