‘World day for decent work’ observed in Dimapur

DIMAPUR, October 11: National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Nagaland region in collaboration with Dimapur District Legal Services Authority (DDLSA) and Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) commemorated “World Day for Decent Work” on October 7 at ACID Hall, Dimapur.

A press release by NDWM Nagaland region stated that special invitee, W. Tamwang Konyak said that domestic workers need to be united and that they needed to recognise their work as important.

He also informed the gathering about E Shram portal and appreciated the contribution of domestic workers to the society. Konyak also assured to help the domestic workers become “visible part of the society”. In his address, Yanbemo Ngullie from DDLSA stressed on the theme, “Making decent work reality beyond pandemic” and explained to the domestic workers the four pillars of the decent work.

Earlier, in a welcome address, NDWM Nagaland region coordinator, Sr. Pramila said NDWM along with All Nagaland Domestic Workers Union (ANDWU) would join in the struggle for living minimum wages and a pay a decent wage for the domestic workers were they would be able to sustain their family.

Pointing out that Dimapur alone has almost 2050 domestic workers, both migrants and of the place, Sr. Pramila said it was high time to recognise domestic workers as workers.

In a demand to Nagaland government by NDWM Nagaland region, Sr. Pramila said the government needs to enrol the domestic workers under the schedule of employment thus entitle them for the minimum wage. NDWM also demanded for social security of the domestic workers and access to benefits.
