Women delegation meets Governor over Oting killings

DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): Against the backdrop of December 4 Oting massacre, a 29-member women delegation Tuesday met Nagaland governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi at the Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum containing eight-point charter of demands.

In a press release, Naga Mothers Association (NMA) advisor and Global Naga Forum (GNF) co-convenor Prof. Rosemary Dzuvichu said that the women delegates from NMA, presidents and secretaries of Angami Women Organisation, Watsu Mungdang, Sumi Totimi Hoho, Lotha Eloe Hoho, Zeliang Women Organisation, Pochury Mothers Association, Chakhesang Mothers Association, Chakhesang Women Society, Rengma Mothers Association, Tenyimi Women Organisation, Kuki Mothers Association and GNF participated in the meeting.

At the meeting, Dzuvichu said the governor condemned the killings in the strongest terms and assured to take cognisance of the memorandum submitted and also convey to the Centre.

The memorandum, which was submitted to the governor with copies to the President of India, Prime Minister of India, Union Defence Minister, Union Home Minister, Chief Minister of Nagaland and the Home Minister of Nagaland, demanded convening of a special assembly session at the earliest and strongly recommend to the Government of India repealing of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958.

It also demanded all Indian army cantonments and Assam Rifles camps be shifted immediately from all civilian areas and village habitations in all Naga areas.

The memorandum placed on record strong objection to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the floor of the Parliament concerning f ‘mistaken identity’ and ‘self defence’ and demanded an official apology on the same.

Further, the memorandum demand timely investigation by SIT and make public the report on action taken against the perpetrators.

It urged the governor to ensure that the guilty officers and commandos and jawans be immediately suspended pending investigation and dismiss from active service, strip all benefits and come under the purview of criminal procedures of the Court and the Law. The delegation demanded that the names of the identified culprits be released in the public domain.

The memorandum asked the Government of India to help the families of the deceased with adequate compensation and “not insult us with announcements of petty cash compensation.”

The women delegates also urged the government of India to stand by its commitment and ensure signing an early peace accord “for peace in our land.”
