Windstorm causes widespread damages across Nagaland: NSDMA

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) informed that an “unprecedented windstorm” has caused considerable damages across the State on March 2.

 

Damages were reported to the NSDMA, Home Department from Kohima, Kiphire and Noklak districts, stated an official release from the authority.

Initial reports from Kohima included damages to parked vehicles as well as some quarters at Officers’ Hill Colony, towards Raj Bhavan, Kohima due to fallen tress after strong windstorm, it said. 

The NSDMA also informed that reports have also been received of a wild fire at Forest Colony, Kohima.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) along with all line departments have been pressed into action to take stock of the situation to provide safety for the people and properties of the colony, it said. 

Damage reports have also been received from Kiphire and Noklak districts where windstorm has caused household damages in Seyochung and Kiusam circle and Nokyan B Village, in Noklak district. 

Further damage reports from the District Disaster Management Authorities are awaited, added the NSDMA’s release issued Sunday evening. 

Meanwhile, strong winds were also reported from Dimapur and Chümoukedima districts as well as adjoining areas. Power supply to certain locations, thus, was affected during the day period. 

In an update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in an update attributed the current weather condition in the North-East to a “cyclonic circulation” over North-East Assam and neighbourhood.

Accordingly, it forecasted scattered rainfall with gusty winds (speed 30-50 kmph) over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on March 2. 

 

The IMD Met Centre Kohima also had predicted “Thunderstorm & Lightning, Squall etc” and “Strong Surface Winds” on March 2. 
However, no weather alerts were issued for day after.

Several parked vehicles damaged in Kohima

A tree fell near the Nagaland Olympic Association (NOA) office at Officers Hill, Kohima, today due to strong winds, damaging several parked vehicles.

Accordingly, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), District Administration, Kohima Police and Traffic Force, Forest Department, Power Department, and other concerned agencies were pressed into action to clear the debris make the area safe. 

Metekhrielie Mejura, Treasurer of the Officers’ Hill Colony Council, Kohima, expressed appreciation on behalf of the colony to the State Government and its agencies for their dedication and prompt action, despite Sunday being an ‘off day.’

Their commitment to public safety is deeply acknowledged and valued, he maintained,

Meanwhile, strong winds in Kohima since last night caused disruptions to the power supply in some areas of the state capital.

A jungle fire also broke out around Assam Rifles Camp in Middle Midland, Kohima, but was eventually controlled with the intervention of Assam Rifles personnel, the public, and fire tenders.
