Major frontline organisations of the Western Sumi have appealed the Government of India (GoI) to initiate political effort to formalise a ceasefire agreement with the NSCN/GPRN (Akato). Members of the influential hereditary village chief’s forum— the Western Sumi Kukami Hoho (WSKH) told media persons that leading civil society organisations of the Western Sumi called on Akato Chophi at the latter’s residence in Hoito village on April 18.

WSKH President, N Victo Achumi said that the intent and purpose of the meeting was to maintain peace while avoiding factional clashes that could erupt as a result of Akato’s status. “We further appeal the Government of India to formalize Ceasefire agreement with Akato’s group,” he said.

LK Swu, President, Aqhahuto Area GBs Union maintained that the Sumi organisations meeting Akato should not be misconstrued by the wider Naga community. “Akato Chophi is a Sumi but it has to be remembered that the organisation he represents is not only for the Sumis, it is for all Nagas,” Swu said.

According to him, when the GoI has entered into CF agreements with other groups, “Why can’t with Akato?” He added that they would even petition Delhi in this regard.

After splitting from the NSCN (Reformation) in November 2021, NSCN/GPRN (Akato) has maintained that it has declared unilateral ceasefire with the GoI continuing the truce when Akato was in the NSCN (R), which is led by Y Wangtin Naga. The two sides have however to ink a formal agreement.
