Waste management in Dzükou Valley, Nagaland despite several efforts, continue to pose a great challenge for its custodians. As such, the Southern Angami Youth Organization (SAYO) is undertaking new initiatives to address the issue.

Metekhrielie Mejura, SAYO, President today informed The Morung Express that despite the Dzükou Valley being declared a ‘plastic free zone,’ huge amounts of garbage is generated in the Valley causing concern for the custodians.

In this regard, the SAYO President said that arrangements are being made to levy a sanitation fee of Rs 20 per entry to further facilitate waste disposal from the valley to the dumping site. The initiative will start soon.

While few trekkers do make conscious efforts to manage waste and carry back non-biodegradables, many visitors in the valley dump waste rampantly which in turn pollute the valley, making its management very challenging. The increase in footfall during peak seasons also contributes to the issue.

According to a caretaker in the valley, there was increase of domestic tourists during the Durga Puja holidays and it is expected to increase towards the end of November throughout December. Stating that this would mean an increase in generation of waste, the caretaker appealed to tourists and trekkers to consciously manage wastes and cooperate to keep the valley’s pristine beauty and ecology intact.

Mejura said, as part of awareness for visitors and to inculcate a sense of responsibility in every individual, the SAYO would put up more signboards in strategic places displaying the directives issued by the organisation. Another arrangement, the youth leader added, was to ensure that waste is dumped properly, for which it has made arrangements with the Municipality. Waste carried back from the Dzükou Valley through the entry point in Viswema Village will be disposed off at the municipal dumping site, he added.
