Former Chief Minister of Nagaland, Dr SC Jamir on Saturday contested ‘whether the Framework Agreement on the Indo-Naga Peace talk was signed in the spirit of truthfulness and understanding and if so, why the government was yet to form?’

Speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of the Kohima Ongpangkong Telongjem (KOT) at Molu Ki, Kohima on October 8, Jamir commented that the lapses of years after the signing of such noteworthy documents was not a promise of truth in its true sense.

The former Chief Minister also questioned whether members of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly are true to the oath they have taken in the name of God stating that ‘their commitment to the cause of the Nagas was questionable.’

Stating that ‘we have been negotiating for the Naga Solution for more than twenty years and the same has been written, read, revised front and back before it was signed,’ Jamir questioned why nothing has taken shape in the backdrop. “Negotiations are conducted not just to discuss but to take action,” he stated.

Meanwhile, calling on civil societies, churches and the society to welcome members of the faction after dissolution, Jamir said, ‘it will be possible only if we proceed with love and forgiveness.’

He also opined that the Naga society is lacking in truthfulness and irrespective of the government or churches or individuals and society, all was in a lost state. Lamenting that ‘we Nagas were once known to be god-fearing people whose characters were steeped in the virtues of truthfulness, yet in present times, Nagas are not truthful through our actions because of our denial on what was written and agreed upon.’

Jamir pointed out ‘we keep dwelling in the past, who has done and achieved historical remarks.’ “We talk about the Simon Commission. We talk about the Plebiscite of 1951, it was also in tandem with the times but that is not the conversation we are having today,” he said adding, “Irrespective of historical significances, we must ponder whether we will get anywhere or not by sticking to the stipulations of the Simon Commission.”

He further called for taking effective initiatives and commitment towards Clean Election by renewing the promise to stay true and clean in the upcoming election.

CEO IDAN, Government of Nagaland, Alemtemshi Jamir, IAS (Rtd) while speaking on the inception of the union, said the formation of KOT was a result of the political unrest in the state and for the need of a united front which came into being on August 2, 1972.

He further called on the gathering to rethink and imagine a life that is not at all dependent on the government, review the implications of Article 371 A in the present day, and work towards empowerment of women in Naga society.

KOT President, Jongpongtoshi Longkumer in his presidential address acknowledged the contributions of the pioneers and said that with reaching a milestone, it brings an opportunity to look back at achievements and find ways to tackle challenges in the coming days.

The Ongpangkong range is one of the prominent ranges of the 6 ranges in Mokokchung district with 18 villages under its banner.
