Unity and inclusivity requisite for positive development of Naga society: Achumbemo

Zunheboto, January 24 (MExN): The three-day 51st biennial general conference of All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) on the theme ‘Breaking Barriers’ got underway at multipurpose hall, Zunheboto town on January 22. 

Gracing the introductory session as the guest of honour, MLA Achumbemo Kikon stressed on “unity and inclusivity for positive development of Naga society” while addressing various aspects of societal challenges, individual responsibilities, and the role of education.

The media cell of 51st biennial general conference SKK in a press release said that emphasising the significance of assuming one’s identity and the responsibility that comes with it, Kikon encouraged the students to introduce themselves proudly, connecting it to a sense of belonging.

The MLA stated that Sumi are “one tribe that proudly proclaims themselves as Sumi, which is one inherent quality in them.” According to Kikon, this was possible because Sumis have courage and are brave, the release stated. “But you’ll be prouder to say you’re a Sumi Naga. That completes the statement, and you’ll be more proud of it,” he added. 

Acknowledging the numerous challenges faced by Naga society, ranging from political issues to the responsibility of bringing positive change, Kikon highlighted the need for collective action by politicians, student leaders, church leaders, and those in government services. “If we only confine ourselves to our village, our range, and our tribe alone, we will be left behind.” 

Kikon advocated for the Sumi community to march and sail in unison with the broader Naga community.

He explored the historical context of Sumi warriors and encouraged the present generation to embody the warrior spirit in a modern, intellectual sense while challenging the Sumi brothers and sisters to play a significant role in uniting Naga society.

Stressing the importance of inclusivity in the Naga nationalist movement, he called for unity among different communities and urged them to work together as “one Naga family, transcending geographical and community boundaries.”

Citing example of competitive exams where obstacles need to be overcome to succeed, he emphasised the need to overcome obstacles for progress. Highlighting the importance of addressing problems preventing progress at both personal and societal levels, Kikon encouraged the younger generation to understand the value of hard work and not expect success without effort.

Extending greetings, Rahul Bhanudas Mali, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Zunheboto, commended the significant role played by SKK in fostering peace and progress across Sumi inhabited areas and contributing to the welfare of the student community, the release stated. 

Mali expressed gratitude to SKK for its collaboration with the administration, particularly during the conduct of assembly elections while hoping for continued cooperation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Highlighting the pivotal role of students as the foundational pillars of the upcoming generation, he also stressed the importance of securing a bright future through education.

Recognising the diverse pursuits of students, including many pursuing graduation and gearing up to take on leadership roles within their communities, he stressed the significance of acquiring a quality education to unlock their full potential in life.
Encouraging students to steer clear of detrimental habits such as drug and alcohol abuse, the DC Zunheboto urged them to concentrate on personal and societal development.

Acknowledging the abundance of talent in Nagaland, ranging from sports, music to business, Mali encouraged students to hone their skills and strive for excellence in their respective fields.

Earlier Anato Yeptho chaired the session, invocation was led by Rev Inakhu Sumi, Pastor of Zunheboto Town Sumi Baptist Church, song was presented by Zunheboto Range Students’ Union, and welcome address was delivered by Shihoto Jimo, Convenor of Local Organizing Committee. The introductory remarks were delivered by Hukaito H Zhimomi, Vice President, SKK while Hekato Achumi presented the secretary’s report followed by benediction from Enos Kiba, Pastor, Shena New Baptist Church.
