Zunheboto | April 20
As National Fire Service Week is observed from April 14 to 20 across the country, the Fire and Emergency Services in Zunheboto are not only spreading awareness but actively building trust and preparedness within the community guided by this year’s theme, “Unite to Ignite: A Fire Safe India.”

Zunheboto district operates with three fire tenders and a team of 29 personnel. Over the past two years, they have expanded their resources with a water reservoir of 35000 litres and an additional 25000 litres capacity added through bore well installations.
Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Boto V Achumi told The Morung Express that while resources are limited, the team remains mission-ready. “We may be small in number, but our response time is swift, and our team is trained to handle emergencies,” said Achumi. “Our first crew usually departs within two minutes of a call,” he informed.

However, he acknowledged that a lack of modern firefighting gear remains a challenge. “We still operate without fire-resistant suits or gas masks,” he said. “But that does not stop us. We adapt and do whatever it takes, even with our bare hands.”
The fire station itself faces infrastructure issues. “The road linking station to the National Highway is narrow and frequently blocked by roadside parking,” Achumi explained. “Our location in a landslide-prone area without a retaining wall adds to the risk. Public infrastructure needs urgent attention,” he added.

So far this year, Zunheboto has responded to five forest fire incidents. Achumi noted that about 80% of fires in Nagaland stem from electrical issues, often due to poor wiring and outdated appliances. To tackle this, the department has focused on public education. “We conduct regular awareness programs and fire drills. Participation was low initially, but we’re now seeing increased community interest,” he said.

During the week, Zunheboto Fire and Emergency Services organised several events. On April 16, they conducted a fire mock and evacuation drill at Immanuel Higher Secondary School, followed by a Fit India Cleanliness Drive in the town. A live fire safety demonstration was held at South Point Colony on April 17, and team-building activities, including indoor games at the fire station.

Crowd control remains a recurring issue during emergencies. “People gather around, filming or watching, which hampers our response. We often rely on police support to manage crowds,” Achumi said.
He stressed the urgent need for households to take fire safety seriously. “Preparedness starts at home. A single fire extinguisher can prevent a disaster,” he emphasised.
In closing, Achumi made an appeal, “Don’t wait for a tragedy to act. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
