Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Mansukh Mandviya will formally inaugurate the Nagaland Institute for Medical Science and Research (NIMSR), the first medical college in the State.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio informed of the development in an update on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday.
Rio, along with some state legislators, had called on Dr Mandviya in New Delhi to to discuss formal inauguration of NIMSR.
“Grateful for his willingness to attend the inaugural function of the first medical college in Nagaland…” he updated.
The Chief Minister further informed that the Union Health Minister responded positively to the request with the request to convert the NIMSR to a central regional institute such as the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences or Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.
Rio, however, did not speicify the date of inaguration.
It must be noted here that the admission process for the first batch of 100 MBBS students at NIMSR, the State’s first medical college, began on August 20.
All seats, 85 for students from Nagaland and 15 for others, have been filled, accrding the the NIMSR’s list of students admitted at the institute.
The induction programme of the 1st MBBS Batch of 2023-24 was held on September 1, while foundational course was held from September 2-5.
Gets NU’s provisional affiliation
Meanwhile, as per an update on the NIMSR website, the the Affiliation Committee of Nagaland University (NU) has recommended the permission to establish new college under the nomenclature of ‘Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research’ and grant of provisional affiliation of the MBBS programme under the insitutute in the uinversity.
“The same shall be placed in the forthcoming Academic Council meeting for approval,” stated a letter dated September 18 from Yanreethung Ezung, Director, College Development Council, NU to the NIMSR.
