With India reporting the first Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases, the Health & Family Welfare Department, Nagaland, issued an advisory informing that it is closely monitoring the situation. While there is no cause for panic, it would be wise to be aware of the bug that is making the rounds.

The HMPV is not a new player on the scene and is one of the many common viruses that contribute to the winter respiratory illnesses, alongside influenza A, RSV and adenoviruses. It was first reported, or discovered, in 2001 in the Netherlands.

It is important to know that HMPV can affect anyone, especially among young children, older adults, people with preexisting health conditions and weaker immune systems.

Now, the good news is that most HMPV cases are mild and resolve on their own. If there are concerns, reach out to a healthcare professional.

While most cases are mild, it is important to be aware of how it spreads and what symptoms to watch out for.
