ZUNHEBOTO, NOVEMBER 11 (MExN): A UDID publicity, awareness & enrollment drive was held on November 9 at the VDB Hall in Zunheboto. The event, organized to raise awareness about the Unique Disability ID (UDID) and assist individuals with disabilities in enrolling for the program, was chaired by H. Sasuli Sumi, Welfare Inspector. The drive aimed at empowering persons with disabilities by informing them of the various government welfare schemes and services available to them.
The event opened with an invocation by Aboli Aye, Associate Pastor of Women, setting a respectful tone for the proceedings. In his welcome address, Y. Tauhong Ngonyen, District Welfare Officer for Zunheboto, emphasized the importance of the UDID initiative. He stressed the need for greater participation in the program to ensure that every individual with a disability receives access to essential government services.
Key resource persons followed with speeches aimed at educating the attendees on the UDID program and related support systems.
Dr Josea Sema, ENT Specialist at Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital, highlighted the medical aspects of the UDID program, referencing the 2011 Indian Census, which reported that 20% of the population lives with some form of disability. He emphasized that the UDID system is a critical tool for ensuring that people with disabilities can access various welfare programs.
Esther H. Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer at the Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority (ZDLSA), discussed the legal rights of people with disabilities under the Disability Act of 1995. She explained how the Act helps protect individuals from discrimination and supports their inclusion in society.
Akihoto K., State Coordinator for UDID, provided an in-depth presentation on the objectives, benefits, and enrollment process of the UDID scheme. He explained that the UDID is a digital identification system launched by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, ensuring that every person with a disability in the country is registered and provided with a unique identity. This digital ID makes it easier for individuals to access government benefits and services.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Innoto K. Achumi, Senior Supervisor, who expressed gratitude to all the dignitaries, speakers, participants, and organizers for their contributions to the success of the program. Nupato Zhimo, Assistant Youth Leader at ZTSBC, closed the event with a benediction, offering blessings for the continued success of the UDID initiative.
