Tuensang villagers plant around 1500 saplings

Tuensang Forest Division, Tuensang Range in collaboration with NEPED and Tuensang Village Students’ Union (TVSU) organised an awareness campaign on World Environment Day at TVSU conference hall in Tuensang village on June 5.

Under the people’s initiative for plantation drive which will be a yearly activity involving every household of Tuensang village, around 1500 saplings were planted by the villagers near their houses. 

Addressing the event, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, ADC Tuensang said, “plastic is the biggest threat to our environment but people cannot completely avoid plastic use however it can be controlled.”

He emphasized on the practical aspects of understanding this problem and suggested to use cloth bag and avoid using plastic water bottles. He also mentioned that the Tuensang Town Council have initiated a campaign to keep the town clean. The town council are buying back plastic bags from the shops and paying money to anyone that are bringing plastic materials to the council.

To mark the day, TVSU organised drawing competition where Donching Khumla of Tuensang village Baptist Church got the first prize followed by Senti Mongla and Wongtochu bagging second and third prizes respectively. The best presentation was awarded to GMS Tuensang village.

Ngakusomba of Class VI from Tuensang Village Baptist Church recited a poem while Samom Khelen Singh, IFS, DFO cum DMU head, Tuensang Forest Division gave the keynote address. TVSU President said the welcome speech followed by speeches from K Ayen Mongba, Associate Pastor Youth, Tuensang Sang Baptist Lashong and President, Tuensang Village Citizen’s Union. The programme was chaired by Chongki while vote of thanks was delivered by Er Nabum Tonbou.

In another programme, students and faculty members of Wela Foundation School, Tuensang took part in cleaning the campus and areas surrounding the school, making postures, paper bags from used papers, charts and old news-papers. 

After the programme, the students visited shops and local markets distributing paper bags to spread awareness on the harmful effects of single-use plastic and encouraged them to use carry bags of papers and clothes instead. It was coordinated and conducted by the Eco Club of the school.

The school authority also congratulated Lydia Chang of class 9 and Imtikhumba of class 9 for bagging 1st and 3rd position respectively in the district level speech competition conducted by the Forest Department on June 3 on the topic ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
