In the wee hours of June 20, a team of Tuensang Police successfully brought home a 22-year-old woman who had reportedly been abducted from Tuensang town in December 2022.

Led by I Yongkong Toshi Chang, UBSI of Tuensang Police, the five-member team conducted a covert rescue operation and rescued the woman from Barpeta district of Assam.

According to the police, after the girl’s family contacted them, the covert rescue operation team initiated their mission on Sunday at 2 am under the guidance of their superiors, Superintendent of Police Kanchan Kumar Kandpal and SDPO Manish Bhartiya.

Despite facing a vehicle breakdown in Chare town, the team persevered and traveled continuously for 16 hours, eventually reaching Barpeta district in Assam.

Thereafter, by monitoring and conducting real-time surveillance of the abductors and the victim, the team obtained information on their whereabouts and successfully rescued the abducted woman, the police said.

After four days and three nights of continuous travel, the woman was safely reunited with her family.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, SDPO Bhartiya informed that a family from Tuensang approached the police on June 15 with a complaint of the girl’s abduction by an individual from Assam. Subsequently, the police filed a GD entry and registered a suo-moto case after an initial inquiry.

“After obtaining relevant details from the family, our cyber cell and technical expertise team were activated,” he informed.

“The success of this operation lies in the fact that the victim is safe, in good health, and has been handed over to her parents after completing all the formalities. The accused has been arrested and will be presented before the judicial authorities,” he said.

A case has been registered at Tuensang Police Station under 27/2023 and falls under sections 366 and 365 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police did not provide other details of the accused, who was also bought to Tuensang, beside stating that he is a 26-year-old businessman who worked in the area where the girl lived, and gained the family’s trust and stayed in their house for a period of time.

Under the pretext of marriage, he took her to his place in Assam.

However, after reaching Assam, the abductor never contacted the family, leaving the girl unreachable. This raised suspicions, prompting the family to seek help from Tuensang Police Station, the police said.

“I believe it is abduction because he concealed his true identity from the girl, who was unaware of his true intentions. Under the pretext of marriage, he took her away without informing her family,” stated Bhartiya.

“We need to learn from this incident and not fall prey to false promises. Always keep your parents and well-wishers informed about any contact with unknown individuals,” he advised.

According to the police, the girl was confined, beaten, tortured, and subjected to abuse for over six months. However, the Tuensang Police reported that she did not sustain any major injuries and is in good physical and mental health.

“We extend an advisory to anyone who is missing in similar cases or any other cases. We urge family members and well-wishers to come forward and provide us with information. The Tuensang Police will assist in every possible manner. It is my humble request to the Tuensang public to approach us,” added SDPO Bhartiya.

He assured that the identities of the victim, a minor, and the woman would be kept confidential. The public can contact Tuensang Police Station through their 24/7 helpline number at 6009308128 for any assistance.
