Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, SEP 22 (NPN) : In a shocking incident, a truck driver was shot dead by unidentified miscreant near IMC Hall here in the wee hours of Tuesday. It was reported that the incident probably took place sometime after 3 a.m. and it was recovered by police at around 5 a.m.
Speaking to Nagaland Post, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihü Tetsoe, revealed that the victim, identified by his driving licence, was 31-year-old Jiten Gogoi from Dhemaji, Assam. Tetseo said the victim was apparently driving the truck (NL 01Q 8316) belonging to Star Cargo transport agency from Guwahati alone and had reached the New Field check gate around 1:46 am after which the incident took place. The truck was partially loaded with items like candles, sanitary wares and animal feeds.
Mentioning that a police team discovered the body and took it to hospital, Tetsoe stated that as per preliminary probe, the victim was shot from behind with a .22 pistol. As the incident took place in the wee hours, there was no witness, he added. The CP said investigation was on and further details would be known only after it was over.
NCD, CNCCI, DCCI, PAC flay killing: Naga Council Dimapur (NCD), Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI), Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Public Action Committee (PAC) Dimapur have condemned the incident.
Expressing grave concern that such a serious crime was committed in the heart of Dimapur town, NCD general secretary Thsapongkyu Sangtam in a statement, termed the incident as “gruesome and shocking”.
He demanded that law enforcing bodies leave no stone unturned in arresting the culprit at the earliest and awarded befitting punishment as per law,while also ensuring a peaceful atmosphere to the citizens of Dimapur. NCD also expressed its deepest condolence to the bereaved family members.
CNCCI chairman Dr Khekugha Muru and general secretary Dr Seyievilie Mor also expressed shock at the incident and demanded that the law enforcing agencies and Dimapur district administration leave no stone unturned to arrest perpetrators of the crime at the earliest.
CNCC said the incident has smeared the long peace which the state was witnessing and reiterated that gun culture and killings would not be allowed to take over “our society again”.
CNCC on behalf of the business community of Nagaland, CNCCI also conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family.
Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry(DCCI) in a statement by its president Alashe Zhimomi, expressed “disgust” that the peace prevailing for long has been distributed by the killing and cautioned that the business community would not remain mute spectator.
DCCI urged upon the law enforcing agencies and district administration to immediately bring the culprit to book failing which the business community would close down the transport operations in Dimapur.
DCCI has also conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and also assured of its solidarity. DCCI also vowed that it would not rest till the culprits were arrested and befitting punishment awarded.
Meanwhile, Public Action Committee (PAC) Dimapur has appealed to the district administration to investigate the killing with all seriousness and bring the culprit to book at the earliest and award befitting punishment as per the law of the land.
