‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces’ in Chizami

Kohima, October 7 (MExN): The first-ever Inter-Unit Literary Competition, with the theme ‘Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces,’ drew more than 250 participants, including students, instructors, village leaders, and student leaders at Goyiepra Memorial Government High School, Chizami Village on October 4.

Commemorating the International Literacy Day 2022, the theme focuses on the importance in fostering resilience and ensuring high-quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all, and to re-think the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces.

The program was jointly organized by 5 Student Units affiliated under the Chakhesang Students Union viz., Chizami Students’ Union, Chizami Town Chakhesang Students’ Union, Enhulumi (Yoseba/Pfutsemi) Students’ Union, Sümi Village Students’ Union and Mesulumi Students’ Union.

It is an initiative to address and transform literacy learning spaces by collaborating and using integrated approach through Speaking, Singing, Writing and Creative Art such as Debate, Spelling Bee, Quiz, Oral Folktale, Poetry recitation, Indigenous duet with Tati, Solo, Poetry Writing and Essay Writing, Sketching and Painting.

The speaker Dr Zavise Rume, Professor, Guidance & Counselling Cell, SCERT, Nagaland and the Chairman of All India Education Forum (AIEF) mentioned that we humans are restless yet resourceful, resilient and powerful.

“Our words and actions are powerful. Quality education is the way forward. The ability to read, write and speak alone is not considered a literate person in this contemporary world but having the skill in expressing, reading, writing, and speaking is,” he said.

Today, Dr Rume said, India prepares to provide skilled manpower; one must be able to adapt to the changing scenario and skill themselves for employment and beyond.

He stated that transforming literacy learning spaces is important and we must remember the roles as students and leaders in achieving the goal.

He challenged everyone to learn the skill of mastering different languages particularly one’s own dialect as it is empowering and powerful to connect with diverse people. We must remember our roots.

He applauded the collaborative program and encourage to continue and even expand with other students bodies and beyond for the welfare of the students.

Avezo Kevin Kapu, president Chakhesang Students’ Union in his exhortation stated, “It is encouraging to see diverse Units coming together to mould, shape, develop and nurture the young minds in different fields and develop a liking in one’s interest, ambition and career.Life is a climb. To be successful, one must have the endurance, sincerity, persistence and to inculcate good habits in life.”

He encouraged the students to stay focused, to learn and excel as education will transform their lives and is the passport to the future.”

Exhorting the second session, Vevoyi Vadeo, President of Kohima Chakhesang Youth Organisation stated that investing on the youths and students today for a better today and tomorrow is the urgent need.

“Young people are the present and future leaders. The development of the community depends on the unity itself and the elder generation must mentor and empower the young people to overcome their fears and insecurities to forge ahead.

He also said that challenges are many so are opportunities and encouraged that young people must take the lead in various fields and strive for innovation solutions and positive action in this digital era.

He stated that the society must ensure full participation and inclusion of the young people for a sustainable society.

Kewepelo Tsühah, Chairman of Chizami Village Council in his greetings stated that ‘Victory without a war is not victory’.

Today’s program is like a talent hunt ground for students and encourage them to give their best in their academic pursuits and beyond. He also shared that true education involves the whole development of the body, mind and spirit.
Khrolhiwe-u Tsühah, President of Chizami Students’ Union highlighted that the program is a collaborative effort towards actualizing Sustainable Development Goals (4, 17) Quality Education and Partnership for the Goals.

“Every small action matters and this is an initiative to collectively transform education as student leaders and educators. Not just teaching but leading, inspiring and building the students and young people towards a safe, resilient, resourceful community to ensure quality, equitable and inclusive education is significant,” she said.

The results were declared by one of the judges Pupetso Wezah.

CSU president, Medovi Rhi Education Secretary of Naga Students Federation (NSF), Rev. Mese Rhakho and Vevoyi Vadeo distributed the prizes.

Kewale Wozah, President, Sümi Village Students’ Union and Awa Tsühah President, Chizami Town Chakhesang Students’ Union moderated the Competition.

Metshe-ü Khalo President, Mesulumi Students’ Union acknowledged the guests and Wekutsho Lohe, President, Enhulumi (Yoseba/Pfutsemi) gave the concluding remarks.

Father Amos Kikon and Rev Mese Rhakho invoked God’s blessing at the program. ‘Never enough’ was performed by Dzüpau Letro.
