A training programme of Tier III on local groundwater related issues and participatory groundwater management, organised and sponsored by Central Ground Water Board (NER, Guwahati) under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, RD & GR was conducted at Mokokchung College of Teacher Education, Yimyu on August 18.
The guest of honour, Sutemo Kikon, Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department, Mokokchung, addressed the issues of water stress faced by India, Nagaland, and Mokokchung in particular, the initiatives taken by the District Water Resources Department, and the need for convergence of different departments for sustainable water conservation.
The chief guest, Dr T Alemla Longkumer shed light on one of the college’s primary goal of ‘Conserving the environment,’ and thereby the augmentation of water sources and establishment of Water Recharge reservoir on the college premises.
She urged each individual to take responsibility for preserving and conserving the natural water resources for our future, as water is the elixir of life, without which there can be no social and economic prosperity.
Dakshina Rabha, Officer In Charge, Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), State Unit Office, Shillong, Meghalaya, in her presidential address deliberated on the roles and responsibilities of CGWB, NER in imparting training, reporting, and documentation of Ground water in the North Eastern Region for its augmentation, conservation, and preservation for ensuring the availability of safe and sustainable water to all.
The programme was presided over by Anenuo Pienyu, Scientist C, CGWB, NER. The first session of the program concluded with a vote of thanks by CGWB followed by light refreshment.
In the technical sessions, the following resource persons spoke on the following topics: Hydrological Concept and Aquifer Information System by Tiamenba Longshir, AHG, CGWB, NER; Rain Water Harvesting and Artificial Recharge by Bipul Vishal, STA (Hg), CGWB, NER; Water Quality Issues and its Impact on human health by V Kezo, Scientist C, CGWB, NER; Hydrogeology of Nagaland with special reference to spring water by Anenuo Pienyu, Scientist C, CGWB, NER.
Dakshina Rabha concluded the session with a brief summary of the topics covered by all the resource persons.
