Take active part in Mission LiFE, urges Minister CL John

Kohima, May 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change, CL John today called upon village communities, government and civil society organisations, teachers and the student community, NGOs, and all individuals to take active part in Mission LiFE (LiFEStyle for Environment).

Take part in Mission LiFE and contribute to ‘Building Back Biodiversity’ for the present and future generations, the Minister stated in a message issued on the eve of International Day for Biodiversity (IBD) celebrated annually on May 22.

The theme for 2030, “From Agreement to Action – Build Back Biodiversity,” encourages and calls for all parties to launch their actions to implement Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), he informed.

Accordingly, Mission LIFE is an India-led global mass movement introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to nudge individuals and communities towards “mindful and deliberate utilization, instead of mindless and destructive consumption” to protect and preserve the environment, he said. Keeping this in mind, we must all come together and work across borders, sectors, and disciplines to protect, conserve, and sustainably utilise biodiversity, which will result in restoring ecosystems and bringing back the balance of nature, he added.

The Minister further noted that in Nagaland, the lion’s share of biological resources (88.3%) is owned by individuals and communities.

Therefore, they can play a major role in biodiversity conservation compared to other stakeholders, he noted while appealing to all to continue playing a key role in the conservation of biodiversity and protection of the environment.

Minister John also noted that biodiversity is the foundation of human existence and the interconnectedness of all living organisms and their habitats that enables ecosystems to function harmoniously and ensuring sustainability.

However, he regretted that humankind is faced with unprecedented challenges that threaten the delicate balance of ecosystems due to the alarming rate of biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, and climate change.
The IDB prompts us to accelerate our action in biodiversity conservation, he added.
