State’s first agro-met AWS installed

Commissioning programme of the state’s first two agro-met automatic weather stations (AWS) was held at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Lumami and KVK, Yisemyong on Monday, with agriculture production commissioner (APC), Y. Kikheto Sema as special guest.

A press release from the department of soil & water conservation informed that in his keynote address, deputy director general, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)-NE, Dr. K. N. Mohan stated that this was “just the beginning” and IMD was looking forward to installing agro-met AWS in all the district headquarters.

Dr. Mohan also gave a brief technical report on different sensors that AWS was equipped with and its functions while a demonstration was presented by scientist-E, IMD, Sunit Das.

In his speech, vice chancellor, Nagaland University, prof. Pardeshi Lal said that with the help of AWS, people should be able to forecast the weather way ahead of time and prepare and adapt for eventuality.

He lauded IMD for the installation at the university campus and hoped that it would be beneficial for both the farming and science community.
Meanwhile, APC Y. Kikheto Sema in his speech thanked IMD for working closely with the state government for improvement of weather-related services in the state.

He acknowledged Dr. K. N. Mohan, DDG IMD-NE for promptly bringing visible developments in the field of meteorology during his tenure and for personally visiting the state to take stock of the ground situation.

APC said that the due to climate change, prediction of seasonal weather had become challenging without the aid of modern observing equipment like the one that was commissioned.

He stated that meteorology was still a delicate subject as far as the state was concerned.

In this regard, he assured that the state government was willing to extend all possible help in setting up of infrastructure required to build a strong network for weather forecasting.

Earlier at KVK, Lumami the programme was chaired by senior scientist and head KVK, Zunheboto, Dr. Rakesh K Chaurasia and vote for thanks was proposed by DSCO, Zunheboto, Y Hetoho Swu. At KVK Yisemyong, the programme was chaired by senior scientist and head KVK, Mokokchung, Dr. Keviletsu Khate while vote of thanks was proposed by DSCO, Mokokchung, Ruokuosietuo.
