DIMAPUR, AUG 20 (NPN): Three urban areas of Nagaland made it to the Swachh Survekshan 2020 with Mokokchung town adjudged as the cleanest city of the North East under 25,000 to 50,000 population category. Chümoukedima in Dimapur district was adjudged as the ‘best self-sustainable city of the North East under 25,000 to 50,000 population category.
Pfütsero under Phek district bagged the ‘best city in innovation and best practices of the region in the up-to 25,000 people category.’ The list was announced by Union Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri during a virtual programme “Swachh Mahotsav 2020” organised by the ministry on Thursday.
The presentations were made by the Housing and Urban affairs secretary Durga Shanker Mishra. Indore has been declared as India’s cleanest city for the fourth year in a row by the minister. Swachh Survekshan 2020, a cleanliness survey covering 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 92 Ganga towns based on their cleanliness quotient, was completed in 28 days wherein total of 129 top performing cities and States were awarded by the minister.
Urban development & municipal affairs adviser Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, who attended the virtual “Swachh Mahotsav 2020” at the State NIC conference hall in civil secretariat, Kohima, congratulated the three winning towns of Nagaland. He said three urban local bodies (ULBs) out of the 39 ULBs in the State were selected for the award and termed it a great achievement for Nagaland.
The virtual programme was also attended by Urban Development & Municipal Affairs principal secretary Himato Zhimomi and other senior officials of the department, a DIPR report stated.
In Dimapur, Nagaland PHED Minister, Jacob Zhimomi along with DC Dimapur, Rajesh Soundararajan, EAC Chumukedima, Avizo Nakhro and few other officials attended the virtual programme in video conference Hall, NIC Dimapur.

Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio took to twitter to congratulate the three local body councils in bringing laurels to the state.
“Congratulations Mokokchung Municipal Council on being awarded Cleanest City NE Zone, Chumukedima Town Council for Best Self-Sustainable City in 25-50K category pop. & Pfutsero Town Council for Innovations & Best Practices in category pop upto 25K during #SwachhSurvekshan2020 prog,” Rio tweeted.
Dimapur among 10 dirtiest cities under 10L population
Three North Eastern cities– Shillong (Meghalaya), Dimapur (Nagaland) and Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh)- occupied top 10 positions as the ‘Dirtiest Cities’ with less than 10 lakh population. Shillong was ranked 6th, Itanagar 7th and Dimapur 8th as per survey of the fifth edition of the nationwide annual cleanliness survey ‘Swachh Survekshan 2020’.
The survey focused on collection segregated waste and maintenance till processing site, treatment and reuse of wastewater, curtailing solid waste-based air pollution, among other factors. Rank-wise of the top 10 dirtiest cities with less than 10 lakh population are 1. Gaya, 2. Buxar, 3. Abohar, 4. Bhagalpur, 5. Parsa Bazaar, 6. Shillong, 7. Itanagar, 8. Dimapur, 9. Bihar Sharif and 10. Saharsa.
In terms of cleanliness, Gangtok ranked 319th , Kohima 330th , Aizawl 337th, Imphal 348th, Agartala 356th , Guwahati 376th , Itanagar 377th and Shillong 325th.
Swachh Survekshan is meant to monitor the performance of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, which was launched on October 2, 2014, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. It aimed at making India open-defecation free by 2019.
