Chümoukedima, May 9 (MExN): Rev Dr Chingmak Chang, founder and Secretary, Eleotheros Christian Society (ECS) Tuensang delivered a motivational talk at St Joseph University (SJU), Chümoukedima on May 5 last.
SJU press release noted that speaking on the theme ‘Against all odds’, Rev Chingmak noted the key qualities a social entrepreneur must have in order to be successful are to have a purpose in life, provide quality leadership, have optimism in the purpose against all odds, consistency in ones passion and, to be brave and honest.
Rev Chingmak said as young MBA students, one must have a purpose and it is only after understanding the purpose that students can have a meaningful university life. ‘So also is with a social entrepreneur and his business.’
“When you have found the purpose, even if there are many difficulties, ups and downs in life, you can be like a bullet train bulldozing through problems, poverty and all kinds of challenges,” he said and added, “Nothing can stop you because you have found your purpose, a passion.” He added that social work, social entrepreneur can become a career only if you have found the purpose.
‘The reason why the government makes lot of mistakes is because it presumes the people need this so they give this. The government never goes to the villagers and asks what your problem is,’ he said.
A social entrepreneur is a person who is able to go to the level of the people and understand what they need, sit with them and understand their problem. There is a difference, he said.
Social entrepreneur is a business person. A business person is able to become successful because he is able to understand gaps, he is able to build a market because he knows the people and their needs around them.
A social entrepreneur also makes the people own their problem and that’s how the community is able to work through a good leadership. Trying to be earnest, honest and helpful – these are attitudes young leaders should build on. In leadership, attitude is very important, he added.
“Villagers are the most intelligent people; customers are the most intelligent people. Try not to fool villagers. If you go to villages and tell you want to do something for them, they are looking for attitude, they are looking for character,” he remarked.
The talk was organised by the Department of Management along with Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC).
