DIMAPUR, AUGUST 28 (MExN): The Shamator Students’ Union started its ‘Khimtan Project’ on August 25 under the theme ‘Opening Doors through Literacy.’ The project aims to provide free tuition for primary students from classes 1 to 5 exclusively for government schools under Shamator Town. The project was opened at two centers, one at GPS Sharnator ‘B’ and the other at GMS NAP sector.

The Khimtan project was started with a prayer from Chuno Chuba, Finance and Development Secretary, YBBA at GPS Shamator center and Akumkhiung, Pastor, NAP at GMS NAP sector center.

The word ‘Khimtan’ in Yimkhiung language means foundation. The project aims to provide supplementary education exclusively to the children’s studying in government schools, in order to bring them up to an academic level and reduce drop-outs at higher grades. It also takes into account the lack of home studies which could be attributed to many factors like lack of proper guidance and negligence from parents and many students being domestic helpers etc.

The project also aims to provide assistance to students in completing their homework, clarifying their doubts in their subjects and paying more attention to their weaker subjects. In addition, life skills like personality development and awareness on cleanliness and good habitual practices will also be taught

So far, 129 studens have enrolled themselves for the free tuition from five different schools. Alltogether 9 teachers are engaged in the project.
