Seminar on rural agricultural extension as catalyst for alleviating poverty

Dimapur, March 4 (MExN): The Department of Commerce, Livingstone Foundation International College, Dimapur organised a one day national seminar on the topic ‘Rural Agricultural Extension: A Catalyst for Alleviating Poverty through Sustainable Farming and Averting Food Crisis.’ The seminar was sponsored by the NABARD on March 3 and was held at LFI Auditorium.

As per a press release, the Inaugural session began with Dipika Agarwal, Convenor of the Seminar and Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce as the chair. Tiakala Ao, General Manager, NABARD Regional Office Dimapur was the guest of honour for the session wherein she highlighted the works and goals of NABARD. She also stressed on the major issue of land holding in agriculture, as the local farmers hold small lands which makes it difficult for them to acquire modern ways and means of agriculture.

This was followed by two technical sessions with resource persons, Dr Sosang Longkumer, Director Konger Agritech Pvt. Ltd, Nagaland and Dr Tabassum Khan, Assistant Professor and Head of Commerce at Unity College Dimapur.

While Dr Sosang Longkumer highlighted the various kinds of mushroom and gave a glimpse on the scenario of mushroom cultivation in India and Nagaland, Dr Tabassum Khan drew attention to the curve of climate change over the years and how it is affecting biodiversity. She further stressed on the importance of negating the amount of greenhouse gases through green farming.

The technical session featured paper presentations from various faculties and research scholars from different colleges and universities.

The valedictory programme was chaired by Avikali K Chishi, Assistant Professor and Head of Department of Political Science and Father Sajan Joseph, Executive Director Development Association of Nagaland (DAN) was the guest of honour for the session. In his message, Father Joseph encouraged the gathering to open their minds to the many opportunities available in the sphere of agriculture and to be self-sufficient by utilising and enhancing the local products at hand, the release stated.
