Kohima, December 2 (MExN): Seized drugs collectively worth over Rs 41 crore were destroyed by Nagaland Police as well as Excise Department at Kohima Municipal dumping site, Meriema on November 30.
The biggest destruction of banned drugs was carried out by the Drug Disposal Committee, Nagaland Police Headquarter, Kohima and related with 23 cases under the Narcotic Cell PS, PHQ.
The approximate value of the destroyed assorted drugs in illicit global market was over Rs 35.86 crore, informed a press release from Vizhoto Hibo Superintendent of Police (Crime) &PRO, PHQ Nagaland, Kohima.
As per list provided by the PRO, the biggest seized item in terms of its market value was 9 kilogram and 313 gram of Brown Sugar worth over Rs 18.62 crore. It was closely followed by Heroin (5 Kgs& 130 gms) worth over Rs 15.39 crore.
In terms of quantity, it was Opium at7 Kgs & 936 gms with market value of over Rs 1.79 crore. Other items were 21,480 tablets of Yaba (WY) drugs and 330 bottles of banned cough syrup Codeine. (See Table)
The seized drugs destroyed in the presence of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kohima; Public Prosecutor Kohima, Kohima Court; Extra Assistant Commissioner (HQ) Kohima, Director KRIPA foundation, UBI DEF Kohima, Dobashi DC Office Kohima, Sanitation Inspector KMC and PASI PI Court Kohima.
Meanwhile, on the same day, the Drugs Destruction Committee of the Excise Department, duly constituted under Sec 52A of the NDPS Act 1985, carried out the destruction narcotics & other drugs worth around Rs 5.76 crore at the same dump site.
The items included Ganja (270 kgs), Heroin (2.44 kg), Codeine based Cough Syrup (2160 bottles) and 12000 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon with an estimated street value of 5.76 crore, informed a press release from T Arilong Longkumer, Assistant Commissioner, Excise Kohima (Zonal). The seizures pertain to those effected under Zonal office.
Speaking on the occasion, Phyobemo Kikon, the Asst Commissioner of Excise (Adm) commended the Excise Personnel for the tireless effort despite numerous challenges and to continue the vigil as a moral social responsibility.
Ketho Angami, President of the Ark Foundation, stressed on the need for close collaboration between NGOs involved in demand reduction and enforcement agencies.
