Schools in Tuensang struggling due to transfer of teachers without replacements

A recent directive from the Directorate of School Education (DoSE) in Nagaland to transfer 16 Graduate Teachers (Mathematics) and 141 Graduate Teachers (Science) has sparked concerns in rural schools, particularly those already struggling with staffing shortages.

In Tuensang, the order issued as part of the DoSE’s rationalisation initiative has left Government High School (GHS) Sangsangyu and GHS Yangpi without essential teaching staff.

GHS Sangsangyu, the first government school in the region since Nagaland’s statehood to achieve a 100% pass rate in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exams, is set to lose its only Science Graduate Teacher without a replacement.

Accordingly, the Changsang Range Students’ Union (CRSU) has voiced concerns, stating that the transfer mid-academic year could negatively impact the school’s performance and student morale.

“The transfer of the only science teacher without a replacement does not serve the interest of the school or the students,” a CRSU representative said. “We have achieved a significant milestone, and such a move at this time is counterproductive.”

GHS Yangpi is facing similar challenges, with both its mathematics and science teachers transferred without relievers. Parents and staff have expressed concerns over the absence of teachers in these critical subjects.

“This sudden change has left a significant gap in our teaching faculty,” stated a villager from Yangpi, adding that students are struggling to keep pace with their studies and the remaining teachers are “overburdened.”

The Directorate’s order mandates that transferred teachers report to their new postings within seven days, with no room for requests for retention or reposting. Non-compliance will result in withheld salaries, the order added.

Accordingly, stakeholders in GHS Sangsangyu and GHS Yangpi have appealed for the retention of their teachers or for immediate replacements to be provided.
