Decks are all cleared for S. Phangnon Konyak– BJP’s nominee and UDA consensus candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat, to become the first Naga woman to be sent to the Upper House and the second woman to represent Nagaland in the Parliament after Rano Shaiza, who was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977. This will also be the first time for BJP to have an MP from Nagaland.
On the last day of filing the papers, Phangnon was the only candidate to file the nomination, in the presence of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, deputy chief minister Y. Patton, BJP president and minister Imna Along and host of BJP and NDPP leaders and legislators
Even as the NPF party organization had decided to field its working president Thenucho Tunyi, the party backed out at the last moment as it failed to get the required number of proposers from within the legislators.
With this, and as per norms, Phangnon would now be declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. The election for the lone seat was to be held on March 31.
Earlier, at the ticket distribution ceremony held at the State BJP office Kohima, BJP president Temjen Imna Along thanked the central leaders for choosing the right candidate to represent the state in the upper house.
He also lauded chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP leaders for upholding the pre-poll commitment with BJP and exuded confidence for a long and lasting partnership in the future.
NDPP secretary general Abu Metha, speaking on behalf of the NDPP, said the BJP and NDPP pre-poll alliance was sacred and that NDPP will uphold the commitment.
He congratulated the candidate and also state and central BJP leaders for selecting a women candidate stating that after nearly 50 years, Naga woman representative would be seen in the parliament.
Phangnon Konyak in her acceptance speech thanked the state and central BJP leaders and NDPP for reposing their faith in her and said that she was cautiously aware of the responsibilities attached with it.
