Rural youth imparted skills on agri-based vocations

Dimapur, May 4 (MExN): Agriculture Technology Management Agencies (ATMA) in various parts of the state organised one week training programmes on Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) on various topics from April 26 to May 1.

Suruhuto: The programme at Suruhuto under Sub Mission on Agricultural Extension (SMAE) was organised with the theme ‘Nursery Management of Horticultural Crops and Backyard Farming as a Key for Rural Youth Employment.’ The inaugural programme was chaired by Livika, BTM, and course co-ordinator Tokato Zhimomi, Dy PD highlighted the importance of STRY and its aim at imparting skill-based training to rural youth on agri-based vocational areas.

The programme covered topics such as raising home nursery, demonstration on low cost poly tunnel, organic homemade compost and cultivation of tomato, pea and broccoli. Resource persons for the training were Livika BTM and ATMs Moanenla and Kaoto Sema. The resource persons stressed on the life-skills that can be learned through backyard gardening by practicing motor skills and learning work ethics which in turn will help generate income and employment to the youths especially during this pandemic period, a press release stated.

During the valedictory programme BTT convenor Qhenito Yeptho congratulated the trainees and distributed the certificates to the 15 participants.

Jalukie: ATMA Peren district conducted the training programme on Value Addition of Fruits and Vegetables at Jalukie town in association with SAMETI, Nagaland and MANAGE, Hyderabad. The training programme aimed at imparting skill based training to rural youths so as to create skilled workforce to promote employment in rural areas.

During the course of the programme, Kumui Nring DPD and Tonikali Achumi, DPD deliberated on the importance, necessity and role of value addition in reducing post harvest losses, improving the profitability of farmers and employment creation etc. The different methods and types of fruits and vegetables preservation and value additions were also elaborated, according to a press release.

15 youths from Peren district were trained technically by resource persons Imti Walling, BTM; Woshanthung Jamio, ATM; Keneingunuo Sorhie, ATM; Vimetseino Zao, ATM. The trainings were followed by demonstrations on preparations of King Chilli pickles, Chilli sauces, Brinjal Pickles, Squash, Tomato sauces, Tomato pickles, Papaya Tutti Futti, Banana fig, Ginger candy, Ginger paste, Juice, etc. Certificates were given to the participants upon completion of the training course.

New Akhegwo: Meanwhile, 18 youths from different villages attended the programme at New Akhegwo village under Meluri Block. The training, which was organized by ATMA Phek in association with SAMETI Nagaland and MANAGE Hyderabad, focused on production and post harvest technology on fish culture.

During the training programme, resource persons deliberated on introduction to fish and fish farming, pond management, integrated farming system, economics of fish culture in one hectare pond and post harvest management method. As per a press release, certificates were given to the participants upon completion of the training course.
