Dimapur, September 16 (MExN): The Rising People’s Party (RPP), on September 15, alleged that the 6 months service extension of Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) T John Longkumer was “nothing but blatant abuse of state power which is liable to attract court proceedings against the political leadership.”
As per the RPP, the DGP had “retired on 31st August 2022.”
Accordingly, the RPP asserted that it cannot allow the “state to manipulate public office for personal ambitions and devious political agenda.”
The party also cited a letter reportedly written by the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and alleged that the letter made “crystal clear indication that the NDPP-BJP Coalition is retaining the services of the present DGP for political reasons. “
In the August 25 letter, the Chief Minister’s letter reportedly mentioned that the state is “facing assembly elections in a few months’ time and it is essential to have continuity at the top leadership of the police force to deal with any law and order problems that may arise during elections.”
According to the RPP, the “underlying meaning” of the letter is “very clear that he intends to manipulate the police force and the administrative machinery to “undermine, coerce, and threaten his political opponents in the next general election” and “win by hook or by crook by subverting free and fair elections.”
Moreover, the party also pointed out in a letter to the State Chief Secretary on April 1, April 2022, the Union Public Service Commission, (UPSC) “clearly refused to entertain” the DGP, but the rule of law has been blatantly disregarded.”
The State government led by the CM has not heeded the directions/ruling of the Supreme Court, it alleged, adding that the sole motive of retaining the DGP is to “win the coming election” at any cost. The RPP will take up this issue with the Election Commission of India shortly, it added.
It also informed that the party along with few publicly spirited lawyers and individuals are filing an appropriate petition before the Supreme Court of India with regard to violation of laid down guidelines on the appointment of DGPs in the state.
