A total lack of coordination between the roads and telecom sectors in Nagaland has come to fore once again. It is not an uncommon sight to see the telecoms digging up freshly tarred roads during its underground line maintenance sorties and communication cables getting cut during road repair.
This cycle is playing out, currently, in the Wokha-Mokokchung stretch of NH 02, where road widening works were said to have started in August 2020.
The victim, this time, is the BSNL, with line breaks reported in several points in between Wokha and Chukitong since the road excavation began.
According to a telecom official, the line breaks have been so frequent that the BSNL maintenance/restoration teams in Mokokchung and Wokha have been unable to keep pace. The official said that major breakages have occurred in at least 10 different locations, excluding minor damages. Lack of spares is not helping the situation for the maintenance teams.
Further, the official said that the breakages not only affect the BSNL but also other private operators, resulting in erratic service, customer frustration and loss of revenue.
