Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio inaugurated Shamator district at Shamator on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Rio acknowledged facing hurdles in creating the new district, while urging the gathering to put behind past misunderstandings, reconcile and coexist peacefully.
He also expressed appreciation to leaders for coming together and working out the differences and suggested that Shamator district be called “brotherhood district”. For increasing the pace of development, he said top priority should be given to better road connectivity.
Referring to ongoing road projects in the district under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and NH-202 two-lane project, Rio said a proposal for Trans-National Highway connecting Showuba, Dimapur to Pangsha, Noklak via Chessore and Shamator had been submitted to the Central government. He assured that a cooperative bank would be set up at Chessore, while emphasising on tourism considering the tourism potential in the district.
The chief minister appealed to the people to maintain a peaceful and harmonious environment for the society to move forward. He also called for avoiding land disputes and provide land instead to the government for development purposes.
Addressing the gathering, host and IPR and Village Guards adviser S Keoshu Yimkhiung urged the people to coexist peacefully with everyone for mutual benefit. He stressed that society would progress when peace prevailed.
Deputy commissioner (DC) Tuensang Kumar Ramnikant, who too spoke on the occasion, assured support and cooperation of the people Tuensang, adding that they would be like parents to Shamator district.
On his part, Shamator DC Thsüvisie Phoji gave a brief profile of the new district, highlighting that it had a population of 34,223 (2011 census) and a literacy rate of 68.79%.
Commissioner, Nagaland, Rovilatuo Mor also shed light on the journey towards creation of the district.
Chang Khulei Setshang (CKS) president Nungsanglemba, Agriculture & Co-operation minister G Kaito Aye and former minister Züngküm also spoke on the occasion.
Yimkhiung Tribal Council president Throngsa Yimkhiung delivered the welcome address while a vote of thanks was proposed by Tikhir Tribal Council general secretary W Tothong Philip.
Special numbers were presented on the occasion by T Tali Tikhir and Toshi Yimkhiung. Yimkhiung Baptist Boru Amukhongto executive secretary Dr SJ Akhum pronounced the dedicatory prayer.
Cultural presentations were also made by Sukiur ‘B’ (Sumi), Shiponger, Yakor, Pungro, Shamator, Anatongre and Wapher village troupes.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also laid the foundation stone of DC complex and Village Guards Training Centre at Shamator. He was accompanied by Planning & Coordination, Land Revenue & Parliamentary Affairs minister Neiba Kronu, Housing and Mechanical minister Tongpang Ozukum, Printing & Stationery adviser H Haiying, director general of police T John Longkumer and other senior government officials.
