Rescue of abducted workers comes to light 3 weeks later

In an incident that happened over three weeks ago in Peren, two abducted employees of a road construction firm were rescued unharmed by the Peren police. The information came to light only on July 22, through a press release, issued by the Deputy Chief Minister, Y Patton. One of the abductors, alongwith, a cache of weapons and communication sets, were also captured during the rescue operation conducted in an unspecified location somewhere in Peren. 

Why the case was kept confidential could not be ascertained with the Dy CM’s statement only stating that the two victims were working on the Peren-Maram road project when they were abducted. It commended what was described to be a “swift and effective action taken” by the Peren Police. “Their rapid response and well-executed operation led to the safe recovery of the victims,” he stated.

The team, formed by SP Peren, rescued the victims after coordinating efforts to locate them and engage with the kidnappers, the press release stated. 

According to the Dy CM, the successful rescue operation displayed the dedication and skill of Nagaland Police, their efforts ensuring the safety of the citizens, while sending a strong message against such criminal activities. 

Photographs, assumed to be from the Peren Police Station, that came attached with the release, indicated that the captured abductor was one Witingbo Chawang (20 years), a sergeant major in the ZUF (Kamson) group. He was booked under IPC section 364 (A) and 34 alongwith relevant sections of the Arms and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Acts. 

The weapons seized included one AK series rifle and one shotgun alongwith ammunition, and communication sets, including walkie-talkie and mobile phones. An unspecified amount of cash was also recovered by the police. 

Independent sources said that the abduction was for ransom. The abduction occurred on June 28. The hostages were rescued the next day. 

The Superintendent of Police, Peren, when contacted, said that that the hostages were rescued within six hours of the receipt of FIR on June 29. He said that details of the case will be conveyed in due course of time.
