Extensive efforts are underway to restore vehicular movement, and repair works on the Mon-Namtola Bridge, which collapsed on December 15, are expected to be completed by the afternoon of December 21, according to a district administration official.

The bridge serves as a vital lifeline not just for the area, but of the entire district and hence, it was imperative to expedite the completion of the repair works, stated SDO (Civil) Tizit, while giving a status update on Wednesday.

The single-lane bridge, constructed with sheets of wooden planks on the deck, is situated on the Assam-Nagaland border, linking the border town of Tizit with the market town of Namtola in Charaideo, Assam.

The collapse occurred when a fully laden 12-wheel truck attempted to cross over.

Subsequently, the Deputy Commissioner of Mon issued a travel advisory, prohibiting the movement of all kinds of heavy vehicles between Namtola, Charaideo, Assam, and Mon, Nagaland, and vice versa until further notice.

The SDO, meanwhile, maintained that once the repair works are completed, normal vehicular movement through the bridge is expected to be restored by late Thursday or Friday morning.

In the meantime, light vehicles are using the Jaboka-Pentom alternative road, while local residents are utilising a makeshift footbridge to cross between the two border areas.
