Dimapur, Nov 1 (MExN): Nagaland Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi has urged the Naga people to use the 60th Statehood Day as an opportunity to reflect on mistakes, deliberate and engage on core issues and put in more concerted efforts towards transforming the State.
On the eve of 60th Statehood Day celebrations, the Governor of Nagaland and Assam extended greetings to the people of the state, calling on them to look back and take pride in all the triumphs in the face of daunting challenges over the last six decades. At the same time, he also said it was an opportune moment to “reflect on miscalculated steps and blunders, deliberate and engage on core issues and put in more concerted efforts towards attaining a transformed and progressive State.”
Since attaining Statehood on December 1, 1963, the state has experienced unprecedented progress in every sector and emerged as one of the promising state in the growth narrative of our country, he said.
According to Governor Mukhi, every citizen of the State, from farmers and entrepreneurs, sportspersons, leaders, to missions, churches and civil society organisations, have a vital role as agents of change, none undermining the other.
“We must ensure that nepotism, opaque administration, corruption and anything that corrodes a society has no place in our State. We as a State must take a pledge on this solemn day to aspire to be one such State where meritocracy, transparency and accountability in governance have primacy over parochial and self-interest gains. This is the only way to propel Nagaland and establish itself in this otherwise fast paced world of globalization and modernity,” the Governor stated in his message.
Stating that development cannot be achieved when there is an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, he called for creating a conducive environment so that the children can “thrive and not only survive.” We need to empower the youth and make them job creators so that they can also contribute to the economic development of North East India in general and Nagaland in particular, he said while underscoring the importance of entrepreneurship.
Towards this end, the Governor suggested that many of the educated youth can take up agriculture as a way of contributing in the effort to make a ‘Self-Reliant India.’ This, he said, would not only bring economic growth but also bring self-reliance. “There is a lot of scope in agriculture. With the utilisation of latest technology you can improve crop yields and catapult the state’s development in robust growth trajectory and improve the entrepreneurial landscape of our state,” he added.
“The impact of any development can only be felt when its fruit reach the lowest strata of the society. It has been one of the priorities of our government to reach out to those weaker sections of the society to bring them under the ambit of the development to make them stakeholders of our development initiatives,” he maintained.
Similarly, the Governor also noted that women empowerment is fundamental to the progress of any society. “No nation can progress socially or economically if its women are left behind. If the women are not empowered, if they are not safe, if gender discrimination exists, then the society cannot progress and prosper,” he said.
Further noting that the people, young and old alike, desire for a developed, progressive, peaceful and vibrant Nagaland, he urged everyone to “come together infused with the spirit of fraternity and join hands to build a better and transformed Nagaland for posterity,” and take the State and its people to greater heights and glory.
He also acknowledged the pioneers and leaders who have contributed immensely in shaping the State of Nagaland through the transitional phase, stating: “These leaders with great foresight sowed the seed and nurtured the vision of an ideal Nagaland flourishing in peace, harmony, progress and development… We remain grateful for all the immeasurable sacrifices and unrelenting efforts of many unsung heroes of our soil.”
Governor Mukhi further reminded that the Naga people’s strength is “in our bond as a community, our strength is in our youth, our strength lies in our unique identity and inherent values that defines us as a society.”
Let us therefore rely on our strengths, work on our strength, rise to the challenges and become equal partners in our endeavour to achieve our goals and fulfil our dreams of a robust Nagaland, he added.
