Thousands took part in the peaceful public rally organised by Joint Coordination Committee of Villages for Dimapur (JCCV) at Dhansiripar Government High School Ground on Thursday to protest against the State government’s decision to place Dhansiripar sub-division under the newly-created Chümoukedima district.
Participants held placards that read “No one can snatch away my rights”; “Boycott for inclusion under Chumukedima”; “Force creates hatred and division” and “This is about tyranny & freedom” etc.
Memorandum: The participants later marched to the office of SDO(C) at Dhansiripar where a memorandum, addressed to the chief secretary. The memorandum demanded that the government should immediately modify/rectify the December 20, 2021 notification and should not disturb the status of listed villages, towns, colonies and communities and placed under the administrative jurisdiction of Dimapur DC.
The memorandum also set February 28 as the deadline for the government to make necessary modification/rectification in the notification, failing which, JCCV threatened to resort to more severe steps till its demand was achieved. The memorandum was jointly signed by JCCV convener Lughozhe K Swu, co-convener and head GB Tsithrongse Sangtam, secretary Devendra Rana and executive member Joybolal Khemprai.
Interacting with media persons after submission of the memorandum, JCCV spokesperson K Naben said further course of action would be decided by JCCV if the government failed to respond to the demand.
Govt committee: Meanwhile, the state cabinet has constituted a committee headed by home commissioner Abhijit Sinha, to look into various aspects of boundary demarcations of districts having issues. According to sources, the committee has been given one-month time to study the issue and submit its report to the government.
Earlier, addressing the rally, Naben claimed that all the 45 recognised and unrecognised villages under the sub-division oppose the government’s move to place Dhansiripar under Chümoukedima.
He claimed that barring two or three villages, the majority of the villages were not consulted regarding shifting of the sub-division from Dimapur to Chümoukedima and therefore termed it as “undemocratic” and “forcible amalgamation”.
Naben also said several village councils and unions at Dhansiripar sub-division had either approached the government and submitted memorandums and open letters to express their desire to remain under the administrative area of Dimapur. However, Naben regretted that the government had remained silent to their demands. Admitting that holding such a mass rally was not right due to Covid-19 pandemic, Naben said public were compelled to do so in order to show resentment against the State government’s decision.
President of Sema-Dimasa Union Dhansiripar sub-division Vekuto Swu vowed that JCCV and its members will fight till the end against the decision.
He urged the government to listen to the opinion of the people and lamented the government’s alleged “divide and rule policy”.
Swu said that while the government was yet to resolve the pending inter-district boundary issue between Dimapur and Peren, the motive for creating new districts without even properly demarcating earlier district borders was questionable.
He urged chief minister Neiphiu Rio to look into the concerns of the 45 villages, irrespective of the decision taken in the State cabinet.
Also speaking on the occasion, JCCV convener and ATKK president LK Swu exhorted the gathering not to give up the fight till the government revoked its decision to shift Dhansiripar sub-division from Dimapur to Chümoukedima.
He alleged that the decision was taken without taking into considerations the opinion of citizens.
He claimed that past chief ministers had never spoken of “traditional lands”, and wondered why the incumbent was so much focused on it.
Short speeches were also delivered by Dimasa GBs’ Union president Pizu Langthasa, JCCV co-convener and Tsithrongse Village head GB Tsithrongse Sangtam and Dimasa Public Organisation Nagaland general secretary P Monuhar Thaosen, while vote of thanks was delivered by JCCV secretary Devendra Rana.
