A mass public rally, aimed at prompting the government to strictly enforce the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act (NLTP) Act, 1989, was organised by the Joint Council Purana Bazar (JCPB), East Dimapur on September 24. The rally saw the turn up of hundreds of school students, youths, women folk and church members taking part in a procession from Darogajan Bridge to Government Higher Secondary School, Purana Bazar.
“We are not against the government, in fact we are in support of the NLTP Act,” stated Vikugha Kappo, Convenor of the co-ordination team. The problem lies in the non-enforcement of the act with no effective monitoring agency to take action against defaulters, due to which several people have been running illegal liquor shops within its jurisdiction for a long time, the JCPB noted. “We have tried individually in our respective colonies to ban the sale of alcohol in the past without much success,” Kappo mentioned, further adding, bootleggers were openly selling alcohol without any regard to the law of the state.
As such, the JCPB held a consultative meeting on September 3, 2022 at Purana Bazar council hall and unanimously decided to raise their voice against the existing illegal activities within its jurisdiction.
“We have also appealed to the respective house owners not to allow such businesses to operate from their premises,” Kappo said.
Besides the stance taken against the sale of alcohol, the JCPB have also determined to quell anti-social activities, use of drugs and other related substances under their zones.
In this manner, the JCPB, through a representation letter, have requested the District Administration, Excise Department and the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur to take action against the offenders under appropriate sections of the law.
The chairpersons representing the six colonies were Vikugha Kappo, Model colony; Kumugha Chophi, New colony; Hokiye Shikhu, Joraphukuri colony; Hokhuvi Aye, Middle Colony; Shikato Zhimo, Mt View colony; and David Achumi, High School colony.
